Ive had a miss when I start my truck for some time now. I always thought it was glow plugs that were bad, etc. Well its been 80 degrees in the morning when I start the truck, and the miss is still there. The miss goes away while driving, if you really push on the pedal, let it smoke like crazy for a while, and then voila, it runs fine. Is this an injector taking a bye bye, or should I be looking at something else? I thought I would ask before I have the truck put on the tester and spend the money.
Id bet a injector is going south. I had the exact same problem and narrowd it down to 4 injectors. Changed them and fixed. Mine would always miss on initial start up until it ran and got plenty warm or unless i realy mashed it needless to say injectors fixed mine.
That is also classic symptoms of low compression on one cylinder. Because of the low compression it won't fire until the rest of the engine gets hot enough to heat that cylinder, then it clears out and runs fine.
With that said, I am recommending a compression check before you put any money down for anything else.
Okay, so I had this scanned and nothing came up on the injectors or anything else. I let it warm up this morning to normal temp and took it for a drive. After mild driving for about 5 miles, it was still missing a little bit. Nothing seemed to clear it up except me flooring it for a bit, and then it cleared up and ran normal. Just in case I changed the fuel filter after all this. Any other ideas, or am I off to a shop for a compression check? Could I have a plugged injector?
Its black, and its puffing out of the exhaust when its missing, but only when i push on the gas. No smoke while idleing, just when trying to accelerate.

One of your cylinders is not getting enough air. Hence the black smoke. If an injector were dumping too much fuel you would have a horrid knocking sound that could best be described as sounding like a bad rod bearing.
Sounds like you might have a valve train problem.
Sounds like a trip to the shop is in order. I dont know much about the valve setups in the 7.3's, but could this be a lifter that has gone south? Are the valves adjustable on a 7.3?
