I'd say its the axle U joints. It doesn't matter if the hubs are locked in or not, the U joint still has to pivot when the spindle & ball joints move. When you get it that far apart, you might as well replace all the ball joints too.
Quick update. I seperated the steering at the pitman arm (good call plowpusher) and still had problem with the wheel. So yesterday took a trip to THE YARD and found another box. 40 bucks seemed like a deal to me. The guy just got this truck in about 2 months ago and drove it up the hill. Said it felt O.K. to him. Workin daylite til Tuesday and wifey needs her ride for work next couple days so cant mess with it til tomorrow. I figured throw the new box on and get mine rebuilt if I can find someway or someone to do it. Wanna pull the hubs and do a grease job all over too. Its wrenchin time!!!!
SON OF A MOTHER-LESS GOAT!!!!! O.K. another quick update. Pulled the old gear box off last night, cleaned up the "new" one and got the bolts started. while I was trying to get the rag joint on the box I noticed the steering column was loose at the u-joint......again. I thought I fixed this problem before. The crimping bolt was loose so I tightened and tightened, its not getting tight. Took bolt out and pulled the column off the shaft to find u-joint only moved 1 way. Sprayed it, beat it, sprayed it, beat it. Finally I drove a wedge into to it to spread it out a little. Works both directions now. Left the new gear box on and tightened everything up. Seems P.O. must of had column apart before because the flats on shaft and column werent line up. Dont know how it was even on there. Anyway truck steers will nice now. Im gong back to junkyard and getting that column for 30 bucks out of that truck, just to have. Moral of the story....check your u-joint in the column before you tear your gear box off and have redo you power steering. SON OF A MOTHER-LESS GOAT!!!!! Sorry not very quick.
