I need help! I replaced the broken steering column in my '79 F150. The steering worked fine prior - the steering wheel was just too loose. Now the steering wheel binds and then lets go when I turn it. It appears that the bind is possibly in the gearbox or maybe the u-joint where the column ends. Anybody have an idea what's going on?

my 78 F-250 did that, bind-slip-bind-slip, it was the knuckle on the steering shaft, i lubed it and it freed right up, every now and then it will do it again but i just oil it again, i dont know what the proper way is to lube it, i just poured oil over it, but my 4x4 was a bucket at the time and i wasnt worried about the mess...........
If you have a body lift the resulting angle on the rag joint can cause this. Had the same problem on my 79 Bronco and never did get it fixed. lubing the slip shaft may help.
Hope you have more luck than I did!

This happen's to my 79 F350 4x4 (dually)plow truck every year when I go to plow again. From sitting all summer the u-joint in the steering shaft start's or dose seiz up cousing it to bind.I take my torch with very low low heat, and just warm up the u-joint,and then spray it hard with PB Blaster, and im off for the new seseon of plowing.
I had the same problem. Culprit was the steering u-joint. Got tired of messing with it and called Boregson for a replacement. I think the spelling is right, found them in a street rodders magazine, they do lots of nice steering stuff. Never had another problem.
