I have a 1997 f-450 work truck and the other day the companion flange(pinion yoke) on my dana 80 broke somehow. One side of the yoke broke off completely. First I removed the stupid pinion nut, that was fun. Next was to remove the pinion yoke. I had to drill holes on each side of the remaining yoke so I could use the my 2 legged pullers. Next the yoke was saturated with penetrating fluid for many hours. When trying to pull off the yoke I broke the bolts of my puller. Im using a 5 ton puller mind you. In conclusion my yoke is stuck on GOOD, and Im mad as hell and was hoping someone would have some advice on this subject. Would torching the yoke work better. Also I have limited room and limited flange surface area to hammer it off. Please help ME, Im starting to lose sleep over it.
GOD Bless
Your best bet at this juncture is to remove the complete axle housing - with the wheels on - from under the truck. I would think the minute you light the torch to apply "some heat" to the flange [while it's still under the truck], you WILL touch off all of that penetrating oil + some of the differential 90 weight & maybe even your gasoline tank....
Once the housing is free & clear of the truck, drain the oil, pull the axles & the differential chunk, AND THEN have at the companion flange with a BFH, torch, or whatever to remove it.
Got a dremel tool and some cut-off discs? Small enough to get in there without doing damage to other parts. Might take a couple dozen discs, but I'd guess you could put enough of a groove in it to crack it with a heavy blow and a cold chisel.
I got that stupid thing off finally. Since I was working with jackstands and not a truck lift, I decided to pull the differential out from under the truck. That was the best idea, not having to lay on my back. Well long story short, lots of heat from a torch and help with a sledge hammer and a piece angle iron it finally got off. So thanks to everyone with suggestions. God Bless to you all.
