Differential yoke confusion?

Yes, it is basically a direct fit, although there will be a minor issue with the differential yoke-your 1966 Dana 60
has a lower spline count than the yoke on the '73 Dana (which I believe is a 29 spline) so you won't be able
to use your old yoke on the 1971 rear diff. Go to a driveline shop and get a conversion u-joint-it allows you to
mate your old drive shaft with the 1971 Dana 60 Diff. yok
I'm confused. Bear with this newbie(: So if the 3.54 pinion gear is a 29 spline, and my 1966 Dana 60 4.10 is a 10 spline, is the hole openings on the yoke that the u-joint go into a different size? Why would the spline count affect anything?

Even if the yokes were the same diameter you would not be able to put a 29 spline youke into a 10 spline shaft and viseversa. Of you look into the yoke you will see a series of hills and valleys that go around the diameter, These are the splines. There are a matched set on the pinion gear shaft that the yoke slides onto, hence the reason the number of slines need to match.

As was said in the post you quoted, go to the parts store and get a hybrid u-joint. It may take some searching but there is one out there to fit your needs. I would suggest NAPA or Carquest whee the parts counter tend to be more knowledgeable.

I understand what splines are my confusion is why not just use the yokes from the donor vehicle? If the new 3.54 pinion gear has 29 splines, why not use the accompanying yokes? Why is it necessary to use a special u joint? Am I totally not getting it?

I misread your first post. You need to use the yoke that goes to the axle, if both yokes use the same size u-joint then you can use a standard u-joint, otherwise you need a hybrid u-joint.

You are using the yoke from the donor vehicle. As I mentioned, and provided photos for in the other post,
the '72 yoke is sized different than the 1966 and so are the the size of the cups between the old diff and 1972.

My info was based on using a 1972 Dana 60 with your stock 1966 F 250 driveshaft, so yes, you need the
conversion u-joint. Part number is 1=0134BF. Check the other post you were on-I also gave you a link on where to
buy one.
