You also cannot buy Mercon/DexronIII fluid any longer its not sold. Ford and GM stopped licenses a year ago. Most companies still sell this new "multi vehicle ATF" which is supposed to be the same but with no quality control from GM or Ford who knows if the fluid is a quality fluid.
I just got a 2004 Ford F150 4.6L with automatic tranny. I read the owners manual and it said to ONLY use Mercon V for the transmission fluid and that it COULD NOT be mixed with regular Mercon.
It said to use regular Mercon for power steering fluid.
I need to change out my transmission fluid and filter...any recommendations on fluid that I can pick up locally?

So this must have been a change after 2004 when my owners manual came out?
Anyone know exactly what transmission I have? The owners manual seems almost worthless aside from a few thing in my opinion.
My truck is a 2004 F150 XLT 4.6 V8 Regular Cab Automatic Transmission

Yup things are a changing!!!!
For those that use the Dealer for service, he keeps up with all the changes, for those of us
who do our own service, it's up to us to keep up to date on all the changes & as Mark has said, Mercon-V tranny fluid has been reformulated, so that it can also be used in previous Mercon call outs, like transmissions & power steering systems.
Scroll up to the top of the page & click on "Full Text" TSB's & enter your year, there you'll find a whole bunch of full text TSB's on your F-150, among them the change in tranny fluid specs & a whole bunch of other interesting things, some pertaining to other models as well.
Okay. So I read the service bulletin in "full text" at the top of this page. Very interesting, it has all the recalls and good stuff from my model year. I still have one question though. The page said that Regular Mercon is no longer being made so now Dual purpose Mercon OR Mercon V can be used as power steering fluid.
I have a quart of Valvoline Dexron III/Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid. This fluid should be suitable for adding power steering fluid to my truck right?
It still sounds like Mercon V is the only fluid that should be used for the transmission itself though. If anyone can tell me if what I have is safe for the power steering, that would be great.
