Hi all, I was over in the Excursion Forum for a minute and ended up selling my X. Now I have a 1 owner 03 EB Expedition with 5.4. I am planning on changing all the fluids out over the next few weeks. Truck runs great and I have no immediate concerns but I want to have a fresh start on what I can. You guys have been a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate it. I am planning on flushing the trans and transfer case. My manual calls for Mercron V in the transmission and Mercron in the Transfer case. I have seen some state that you can Mercron V is ok to use in place of Mercron.... Is this correct? The only Mercron I can find is Dex/Merc. I'm not a fan of multi-use fluids if I can help it. Can I get a little guidance here?

Yes, Mercon has been superseded by Mercon V - TSB 06-14-4
They say it is ill advised to use mercon v in the transfer case, so ford came out with a dedicated transfer case fluid. If you are a true purist, you should seek out fords dedicated fluid.
Mine is currently filled with WalMart house brand dex/merc compatible fluid. I changed out the original fluid (assuming) at 130,000 and I'm currently at 171,000 without issue. I wouldn't be too shy about using it again, though unusually use synthetics.
Wal-Mart house brand mercon V is ford certified, so it is guaranteed to have what you need as it has been tested by ford. They being said, suppliers change by region, so it is wise to double check.
Currently, I'm using WalMart house brand 75w140 in the rear axle, Amsoil Signature Series ATF in the trans, Amsoil OE ATF in the power steering, and WalMart brand merc/dex in the transfer case.
If you have AWD, don't use that stupid Ford branded transfer case fluid if your transfer case is a TOD - Torque On Demand unit. Use Mercon V for TOD units. I also recommend going under the truck and removing the stupid AWD sensors from the transfer case plug if you have a TOD unit.
Thanks for all the replies. I didn't get a chance to check in here all week but it appears I need to change my Transfer fluid again. I have the 4X4 with the 2wd, Auto wd, 4wd hi 4wd low option.
I changed the rear axle with 75/140 valoline synthetic for LS and added friction modifier to it. I'm having an issue at low speeds and tight corners, there's a vibration coming up. From what I've read I need more friction modifier. Is this most likely correct?
Lastly this week I noticed some power steering whine, I checked the level and it was above the min so I started changing it out the turkey baster method. Every couple days I could suck the res dry and add Merc/dex. The whine hasn't left. I'm assuming i need a new pump soon. Do you think if I added a filter at this point I may be able save it?

Yes, pour in another bottle of friction modifier, doing so seems to have solved this same issue for other people.

Power steering whine 99.9% of the time is caused by air in the system. On the high pressure side of the pump a leak would show up obviously as fluid. On the low/suction side of the pump a leak will draw air into the system and cause the whine, and it doesn't take much air to do so. Yes it is possible there's a bad bearing or air is leaking around the pump shaft. But just to make you aware, you also have to inspect the low side hose to make sure it's in good shape.
When I had LSD grinding the second bottle of modifier worked magic. Every 30k or so the grinding would start to show up, fluid change with 2 modifiers and back in business.
