Transfer Case Fluid

My owner guide states I should use Mercon ATF in the transfer case, can I use the same Mobil 1 synthetic ATF that's in my tranny? or should I just stick with the dino mercon.

Go with the expensive one. LOL. It's only two quarts. I've used both Mobil 1 and Red Line when I've done mine.

Another vote for the synthetic. While the drain plug is out, look very carefully inside for any little bits of plastic. If you see any at all make immediate plans to get that transfer case rebuilt.
Read this thread for an explanation:

Any particular reason for having to go with the syn for a transfer case?

Didn't see any proof that syn would have helped prevent those transfer case failures.

after i had 20,000 miles on my truck i checked the X-fer case fluid and was badly burnt. the truck had been in 4 wheel drive 4 or 5 time for total of about 20 miles. i dont know what caused it but since i switched its been fine. the truck has 61,000 on it now

Well that's interesting! Ford spec's a fluid that won't stand the test of time and usage which could lead to failure at their expense to repair.Hmmmmm...WTF.

Never tried to offer any.
I'm simply saying while the drain plug is out, check for the telltale signs of shift fork failure.

Well u gave a vote FOR the syn and tied that to a thread on transfer case failure so i took that as supporting data on your vote.

I'm getting ready to change mine out. I'm going with Redline D4 ATF. Less than $10/qt delivered to my door.

No proof here other than an early T-Case (search the Kwik archives for his findings) has 180,000 on her and I've changed out the fluid twice, both to Syn.

Beatings include, but are not limited to, high speed 4-low runs in the sand at Pismo, high torque low speed rock crawling on granite in the sierras, stump pulling, bush yanking, etc. Oh yeah, she's been airborne at least 4 times. Will this suffice in the absence of proof ?? LOL.

Was those beatings done during the pre-syn era?
