Another vote for the synthetic. While the drain plug is out, look very carefully inside for any little bits of plastic. If you see any at all make immediate plans to get that transfer case rebuilt.

after i had 20,000 miles on my truck i checked the X-fer case fluid and was badly burnt. the truck had been in 4 wheel drive 4 or 5 time for total of about 20 miles. i dont know what caused it but since i switched its been fine. the truck has 61,000 on it now

No proof here other than an early T-Case (search the Kwik archives for his findings) has 180,000 on her and I've changed out the fluid twice, both to Syn.
Beatings include, but are not limited to, high speed 4-low runs in the sand at Pismo, high torque low speed rock crawling on granite in the sierras, stump pulling, bush yanking, etc. Oh yeah, she's been airborne at least 4 times. Will this suffice in the absence of proof ?? LOL.
