I have a 1980 F-250 with a 400cid engine. It quit me all of a sudden as I was cruisin' down the road. I have determined there is no spark now. I put on a new ignition module but that made no difference. There is power to the red wire on the coil. The starter will crank over just fine but no spark to plugs. Where do I start looking?
I'm experiencing the same problem, I think. I will not have any spark. I'll shut the hood and come back in 3 hours and turn the key and it'll start right up. I was told the problem was the module, but after replacement the problem is unchanged. I'm going to troubleshoot the Duraspark ll system according to the manual and I'll let you know if I've found a cure.
Let me know if you've had any success in remedying the problem.
I was having a similiar problem with my 85 F150 4x4 with a efi 302. I had everything checked and tested and everything was ok, but the coil tested a little low, but was said to be ok, so I replaced it anyway and "wah-lah" it fired and runs great.I hope this helps.
Thanks for the input. I'll try it right at the cap. The frustrating thing here, is that it seems as though something is getting too hot, or building up to much resistance. As I will have no spark, shut the hood and it will turn over and run fine in about 2-1/2 hours. No wiggling of wires or anything.
This all started with a problem with my trailer brake controller. My dad was helping me and started saying, "This wire has no purpose" and disconnecting them from the starter relay. I think I'll begin by reconnecting them.
We disconnected them because my trailer brake got fried. I haven't been able to determine what's wrong with it when I benched it and a $50.00 a pop, there almost not worth taking to anyone.
I think I'm going to just have to go through and check for wire wire all over my harness. Need to do it anyway. And hopefully I'll find the problem with my ignition system.
Towbar, I had the "come back in a couple hour and it cranks" problem also. Mine was the pickup in the dist. I also changed the reluctor at the same time since they work together.
