The mpg meter on my 2000 V10 seems accurate every time I've checked it. You have to wait for it to average itself out. It would be nice to know how it determines how much fuel it is consuming via injector output or fuel level sensor. Based on the above comments it appears that it works better on the gas engines versus the diesel.
7.3 DIESEL EX I get 13 to 15 when wife drives. 16 to 17 when I drive it. I have allways tried to be easy on the transmission, brakes and MPGs. BECAUSE IM THE ONE THAT HAS TO FIX IT. Remember the faster you go, the harder it is to punch a hole in the air. (other wise known as resistance).
My MPG is pitiful compared to other 6.0's. I am sure it is mostly my fault. I am currently averaging 12.6. 1/2 of any trip over a mile is delivering a camper, then I use the truck to move campers around my storage lot, and the compute home is ~1 mile, with 3 stops and 2 additional 90 degree corners.
Last time I ran empty I got 15 at a constant 73, then with a 3K trailer at 70 I also got 15.
BTW - with all of the mods my lie-o-meter is within .1 MPG.
The "lie-o-meter" is telling me I'm getting 12.3 with my Ex 7.3. Ijust picked it up recently and haven't filled it up to compute the mileage manually. I've been driving mixed highway/city with the truck and am surprised at the 12.3 when I have read about most people getting high teens. I have no mods and stock tires and have been keeping the rpms below 2000. I did just change a dirty air filter last night. Any ideas about other ways to make the mileage better?
So I just got back from my road trip to Indiana. I left my DP Tuner on 80e for the entire trip, except when my cousin's husband and I went for a quick run over some country roads. I had him kick in the 120 Race, and nail it! He was impressed, to say the least. Offered to trade me his '05 Pontiac minivan straight across!!
Anyway, we took I-40 to Williams, AZ, and went to the Grand Canyon. Back down the hill, and spent the night in Holbrook, AZ. Next morning did the Petrified Forest / Painted Desert. Lots of low speed driving, and frequent stops. Drove to Tulsa, OK after that, and spent Saturday night and Sunday night there. Visited with 2 of my 3 brothers on Sunday; again, lots of low speed start and stop driving. Left Tulsa Monday morning, and made Cloverdale, IN Monday night. Rolled into Bargersville, IN Tuesday morning. Did lots more local driving, and went to Indianapolis to the Sailors and Soldiers Memorial and World War Museum. Fueled up Saturday night, and left Sunday morning. Came back I-90. Spent Sunday night in Sioux Falls, SD with trips Monday thru the Badlands (slow driving & lots of stops); up to Mt. Rushmore (steep grades). Spent the night in Gillette, WY and did Yellowstone on Tuesday (came in thru Cody; a fantastic drive!!) and spent Tuesday night in Montpelier, ID. Made Las Vegas Wednesday afternoon, spent the night, and got home this afternoon. Many of the highways are posted 75 MPH, and I did mostly 78-80.
All told:
5288.5 miles driven; averaged 17.99 mpg for the whole trip. Hand calculated (well, Excel spreadsheet) and Lie-O-Meter said 22.2. I am more than pleased with the results from the DP Tuner!!!
Sorry for the long post. I will get a gallery up soon, and post some of the pictures we took. Good to be back on the site, and now, I leave Sunday for a week at Carpinteria State Beach pulling my TT. Be interesting to see the mileage on 60 Tow!!
In the winter, one tank of gasoline will last our '05 4wd V-10 for several MONTHS, sometimes even ALL WINTER....!
(of course that is because we have no need of it most of the time..and rarely drive IT AT ALL, except when towing our boat or collector car trailer.. we have a nice mini SUV Toyota RAV 4 which seats four VERY comfortably...)
C'mon...guys...you want to move some SEVEN THOUSAND POUNDS of machinery ? Takes ENERGY to move MASS...and the faster you want to move it, the more ENERGY it takes.
Some months ago, one of our smarter posters posted the only REAL solution to the fuel mileage issue. He said "put a sharp tack on your throttle pedal". A LIGHT throttle is the best way to reduce fuel consumption ( short of doing what we do....!)
I think he means that with one tank of diesel and then supplementing with WVO (waste vegetable oil) he goes 4k miles. Sounds like the way to go!! Where do you get your WVO?
