What to look for??

I am getting married and my soon to be father in-law has a 91 f250 with a 5 speed and a 7.3 idi and he said he would sell it to me for 2500.00 what should i look for before i buy. It has a ATS turbo and intake on it with gauges for boost and egts. i dont really know a whole lot about diesels so any help would be great.

Also what is the typical fuel mileage out of one of these trucks it is also a 4x4.

Thanks

Clint

Ask him if he keeps his coolant PH balance right. If he doesn't know what you mean there could be electrolysis/cavitation/pitting....there's a lot of names for it but basically a pin hole (or larger) will eat through the cylinder wall and let coolant into the cylinder, not good.
If it doesn't have a lot of miles on it you could get lucky and take care of the PH now and stop it IF it's happening. My 7.3 Turbo has 370K on it without a problem.
You might take the hose off of the turbo so you can get to the turbo "shaft" and give it a good pull/push and see if there is ANY play in it, should be none.
MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING!!!!!
Sounds like a fair price from here, especially with a turbo and gauges.
I get 15.33 MPG overall so far in my "94 turbo IDI, 5-spd., CrewCab, 4wd and I don't drive too easy, I have a straight pipe and like to hear it run. That's a fair mix of city and hwy. driving.

Get the truck NOW so you don't have to fight with the ol' ball-and-chain about it later! LOL!

thanks for the info and he doesnt know about the PH balance i did ask about that. But i did find out that the truck has about 170,000 on it but the motor was replaced at 110,000 and the trans was change at 130,000 and the trasnfer case at around 140,000 so everything is fairly new.

Did you check the turbo shaft, it's easy to do. I was told to check that when I went and got my truck 2-months ago, by a "poster" on here.
Was the motor new or rebuilt, if it was new your golden.
If rebuilt did they "sleeve" the cylinders? If so it might even be better than new.
I'd get it, put synthetics in the drivetrain and flush the radiator/cooling system. Actually draining it is probably good enough so it depends on how much work you want to do.
Go to NAPA: get their antifreeze as it's correct for diesels. Get some coolant test strips and their addative as they work together.
That should get you going.
