Hello,
I'm considering buying a new toy and it happens to be an f-350. It's a '99, 7.3, single cab and looks really nice. It has a 10'' lift and 46'' Goodyear MVT's. I know that by no means is this truck going to be exactly sipping on the diesel. But I called the seller and asked about the mpg. He told me that he took a 250 mile trip on a half tank, along with a full size trailer that had a jeep on it. Half a tank would be 19 gal, so that comes out to about 13.2 mpg. 46'' tires, AND a full size trailer with a vehicle, that seems almost impossible to me. He does have a programmer type thing (I don't remember what brand or anything) with 12 settings and he says he keeps it on the 4th setting for fuel economy. I don't know if that will help you all out or not, but I thought I'd mention it. He also has lots of upgrades, gears, intake, etc etc, that could possibly help with fuel. But that number for mpg still seems kind of high. Or is it really possible with the right upgrades?
My brother in law has 2000 f350 7.3 on a good day running empty milage is 13.5 , 10,000 # trailer barely 12 mpg. my 2004 6.0 empty is 19 mpg and loaded 14 mpg
Well what do you guys know about programmers/chips? I know that some of them are really good and do give great gains in mpg, hp, torque, etc. If it's getting 250 on a half tank with a full load, I wonder what I could expect with no load.

I wish you luck, but the reasons your probaly not getting many responces is because no body can figure a nice way to tell you this Previous owner is not being truthful with you... If you wish to get specific answers about the 7.3 you could drop down to that part of the forum and they can be more helpful... I can tell you that I just went from 30" to 35"s and my mileage went from 18mpg's to 15'ish. I couldnt imagine what it would be with 40's on it.
That big of a tire opens up a whole other can o worms, and recomended mods, that if, were not done on this truck, you can be in for one heck of a headach instead of the toy you were hoping for
I can tell you the 7.3 is a desireable engine. But I would be asking many other things of this Previous owner other than mpg's.
As far as chips there are many good ones, and all users will have a diff preferance... Kinda like who is the best NASCAR driver thingy. There is only a few to stay away from so your odds are good that you may have a good one.
Do some reading on here before you buy, get some specific questioned about the truck your looking at, and dont be in too much of a hurry, unless its a smoking hot deal then jump on it
Well I know enough not to chip or program my 6.0 and on the 7.3 chips and programs sometimes cause problems
any modification with the wrong person behind the wheel can cause problems.
As far as mileage goes...well good luck getting an accurate answer. Its a truck and like i've been told here before you do not buy a truck for its mileage or its cadillac ride.

Well that is what I was asking. If what he is saying is ridiculous, then I'd like to know before I went and bought it. I asked many more questions and talked about much more than mpg's with the guy, it's just that the number for mpg's that he gave me seemed odd. So you are saying it is impossible and what he is telling me is untrue? No matter the mods he has done, that number is unattainable in a truck with those specs?

I understand that. I said in my OP that was wasn't expecting great mileage. I was just asking you all if that number sounded right.

I would not say its unatainable, but you have given us only general info... there is way more that we need to know.
In my opinion, I dont think the mileage story was completely true. But hea! ive been wrong before
