I had a rather spectacular heater core failure today as I was driving my truck to the parts store. One minute everything is fine and the next its raining coolant from my under my dashboard, fortunately I was only a few miles from home so I was able to turn around and made it with out overheating.
So a couple of questions...
Is antifreeze difficult to remove from carpeting?
Is the heater core still available from Ford at the parts counter?
Will the heater core from any other years fit into the '71 heater box?
I've seen coolant leak from hoses, radiators, thermostat housing, and coolant pumps but I have never seen coolant leaking from under the passenger side door. I wish that I had my camera.
The core is a readily avalible part form parts houses. 67 to 79 are the same.
The only way to remove the goo is remove the interior and wash, wash, wash. Dry the floor sheet metal good and reinstall. That crap will burn a hole through steel if it is allowed to concentrate through evaporation.
Mine blew up recently....I just parked the truck so the passenger door was at a downward angle and hosed the (heck) out of it....a spray nozzle pretty much saturated the carpet and just kep pushing all the foamy stuff towards the door....it dried in less than a day...of course, I am in Colorado, where the humidity can be 5 to 20%!
just takes an afternoon of your time. i had to do it on mine, thank god everything on our trucks is so easy to work on. most vehicles most of the time you have to remove the dash and it is a living hell.

I took the day off from work (the beauty of being the boss) and removed the old heater core, I have a new one on order from a local parts store for around 20 bucks. The old one is cracked somewhere that I can't see but it's leaking pretty good without much pressure applied, so it definitely failed.
I took out the bench seat, and carpeting and padding and rubber cab liner and padding (you starting to see a theme here?) The fiber padding smells like the inside of a horses stall, and ain't too pretty to look at either but thirty minutes with the power washer has most of the nastiness removed. the passenger side floor pan was rusty but not so bad that I couldn't remove most of the rust and still have a good floor pan. Tomorrow after work I plan on using some rust converter on it and then priming it.
The nice thing about having the interior removed was that I could clean the inside of the cab (with the power washer) to get rid of 37 years worth of accumulated grime. everyone should own a vehicle that you can clean with a power washer inside and out.
Or a 74 Merc Monterey. Shop manual allowed 10 hrs or something ridiculous, the RH fender was to be removed! Or, upon further study we could torch an 8" square hole in the inner fender. Which do you suppose we did??? Just tacked it back in when we were done. The car lived to nearly 250000 miles!!!
