i went to go check out a 76 f150 4x4 yesterday, the guy said short bed stepside so i got excited and had to go see it as fast as possible, to my surprise he had a early 80's stepside bed on this truck, and it looked REALLY good, (maybe it was the fact it was sitting up high on 35" swampers ) but has anyone here seen this kind of thing? or better yet, done this to one on their trucks?

Never seen a Chevy bed on a Ford truck before.
Chevrolet = Stepside / Ford = Flareside.
Several members here have done this conversion, don't know what's involved...prolly have to drill new mounting holes as the 1980's trucks are totally different.
I actually had this idea myself... was considering it due to the fact that my 77 bed being single wall and fairly dented will take some serious time in the body work department. Also the 80's beds due to being double walled weigh a bit more so i believe you would get a little better ride. Not to mention the fact that the 80's bed has a steel floor. Thats all i know... oh and Ford did not call stepsides "Flaresides" until 94. Its not a chevy thing, its a stepside bed. Your truck is a F-100/F150 STEPSIDE... After 94 Flareside was the actual model of the truck. In my case, im building an F-350 STEPSIDE. Oh and another supposed chevy thing...lol... my truck has a big block in it too.
Post some pics plz. like i said i had the idea, but i want to see what it actually looks like... im still kinda entertaining the idea.
oh and Ford did not call stepsides "Flaresides" until 94. BS! Its not a chevy thing, its a stepside bed. Uh huh, not by Ford Motor Company nomenclature it isn't. Your truck is a F-100/F150 STEPSIDE FLARESIDE... After 94 Flareside was the actual model of the truck. In my case, im building an F-350 STEPSIDE. Oh and another supposed chevy thing...lol... my truck has a big block in it too.
I dunno how long you've been into Ford's, but Ford originated the term Flareside in 1932 and NO Ford pickup was ever called a Stepside by Ford Motor Company...ever.
EVERY Ford parts catalog on the planet refers to these trucks as Flaresides.
I was a Ford partsman for 35 years, a Ford car/truck collector since 1956....so I know what the hell I'm talking about.
Don't take my word for it...ask around here on FTE. The members will tell you the same thing I did...a FLARESIDE IS A FORD, A STEPSIDE IS A CHEVROLET.
I recently went and looked at 1978 f150 4x4 with an early 80's STEPSIDE box on it and it looked good, way better then the rest of the truck actually.its too bad some people have to focus on the specific termanoligy and not on the fun and usefullness of these forums.I can't imagine why anyone would call the stepsides, maybe because of the big steps on the sides.
Hey ND, I dunno how you put up with people telling YOU what Ford did and didn't do...For the guys who wanna argue with you...well, I guess ignorance is bliss. FORD=Flareside, Chebby=stepside.
Well, for one thing, he's a here.
And considering that his birth year is 1987, how much Ford history could he know?
When it comes to Flareside/Stepside...not much.
I don't know everything, hell...no one does...
But I do know what Ford Motor Company called these pickups, and Stepside ain't correct. Not now, not then, not ever!
btw: Ppl at parts counters used to call the 351M a Midland.
My stock reply was...what Ford engine plant is located in Texas?
ok, sorry for causing such an argument about my post, i honestly had no idea ford never called them stepsides, and i actually thought M stood for modified, what does it really stand for ? sorry if i sound "ignorant" for asking these questions..
all I'm saying there ball68 is that getting technical with someone only asking a question is pointless, maybe not everyone has studied ford history 101.I've been around for awhile and maybe I'm just an ignorant canadian but I guess I'll have ot live with it.
fancy balls68,ask 10 people what kind of box that is and I bet your going to get 8 people call it stepside, right?obviously not,but I'm also pretty sure fords sales brochure didn't call the 1973-79 ford truck a dentside!!!but we all know what each other means when we say that, anyhow I will never comment on anything corrections made on here again.my appologies for sounding like an idiot.
and i actually thought M stood for modified, what does it really stand for ? sorry
I'm going to squash this one before it goes any further. To this date, Ford has not released any public documentation that specifically states what the M actually stands for; therefore it is a pointless argument. Until someone here can scan a copy of official Ford literature and post it to this site, it is not defined. To all the nay-sayers: I don't care what your grandpa always called it, I don't care what you heard it called elsewhere on FTE, I don't care what the guy selling one on Craigslist is calling it; anything that you cannot prove is hearsay!
Oh and BigJake - no harm in bringing your questions to FTE! That's what the site is for
no ball68 that wasn't meant as an insult, and your right were all here to learn and share knowledge, theres alot of different termanoligy out there for everything and knowing the right one never hurts.
