Negative Battery Clamp/Cable

Went to clean up the battery terminals on my 2001 Expedition - only had it a couple of months and when I took the negative terminal off and brushed away the corrison, parts of the band were gone at the bottom. The top part of the band is still solid. Cleaned all up and reinstalled - sort of.

With gaps in the bottom band, it wouldn't tighten - no kidding, so then I took the negative cable assembly and twisted it upside down - then the good top part of the band did successfully clamp at the bottom of the post. Seems tight, also had to use a different 10MM bolt that was the same threads to tighten it all down. Lack of maintenance from the previous owner I guess.

So after all this, what have any of you done:

Is it not too bad to get a new dealer negative Battery cable - clamp all and thread it through all that wiring, wherever it goes down on the block?

Can you really have good luck with cutting the cable clamp and somehow really tightening the wire to an aftermarket clamp - where do you get enough force to really "cold weld" the new cable and clamp together?

Well, thanks for your ideas

Mike

My positive terminal gave me a problem... It wouldn't tighten down enough and as a result... No starty. When I had it in last time I had the dealership look at it, and they put on a good old fashioned battery terminal and it works fine now. That coppery looking flimsey thing that came on it was just another POS engineering mistake by Ford.

Loose battery clamp

As a temporary fix, you can screw in a screw between the terminal and the clamp to take up the slack.
