What was Henry Thinking?

Play along at home with a new game:" What was Henry Thinking?"

Try to identify the what style of drive this bolt that attaches my driveshaft to the differential:[/IMG]

My solution was to beat a 1/2" socket onto it with a BFH and I'll probably do the same when reinstalling it and then ask Mr. Sears or Mr. Roebuck, "Please, sir, may I have another?"

12 pt metric was what I used on an A*star drive shaft. Same head design used on the Lima 2.3 cylinder head bolts. Don't they have 12 pts where you live?
Ah, Cleveburg, the mistake by the lake. Loved it and the Emerald Necklace. The parties in the park on Fridays were well attended by NavFinCen when I was stationed there. Is the Coast Guard still there at the foot of E 9th?

12 pt bolt uses a 12 mm 12pt wrench/socket Ford has used them for years.

Thanks for the information. You gotta cut me some slack on these things: I'm college educated. Yes, the Coast Guard is still at the foot of 9th st. Tom, but you'd hardly recognize that area now: yuppie-fied and Captain Frank's is long gone. I still maintain "What was Henry Thinking?" would make a good game.

No, external spline drive has flats just like a driveshaft spline. This is a 12pt bolt.

That's right. 12pt bolts allow better torque distribution from the driver to the bolt. I picked up the proper socket to remove the bolts at Sears when I lubed my driveshaft spline. I believe these bolts are high strength steel so if you replace them make sure the equivalent is used.

Spline drive is different, and often used on aircraft such as the F-16.
They take more torque before stripping than the 12-point fasteners:

Yup, definatly a 12 point. Those 12 point sockets can be a pain in the **** to find in singles. At least around here they are.

haven't came across those yet but when I was rebuilding my mitsubishi I bought a large set of craftsman with 6 and 12 point metric and standard for about $150.00 so I was covered all the way around. plus a set of those t-star sockets for brakes and a few other odds and ends and have about everything I need. if I come across something to wierd its off to a mechanic I go, I hate working on new cars.

You can pick up the single 12pt 12mm socket at Sears. A 3/8" to 1/2" adapter and an impact wrench makes quick work of removing them.
