What was Henry Thinking?

These bolts were developed for the hot section of jet engines to help prevent the head from stripping when they were being removed....The hot section of jets have heat corrision that makes it difficult to remove the bolts.

What was Henry thinking

When I was in the Navy I was jet engine mechanic, when we changed out the hot section we had to remove and put back(new) over a thousand of these things..........Needless the say I hated the *** things.

yeah, my clients are guys from Aircraft rebuild plant (they have semis too, bit cant fix them). They hate hot section fasteners too. Thermall stress change structure of metall and bolt were designed to prevent self unscrewing in thermall stress conditions and that's why it is so difficult to uscrew them. My father was in air force in early 80-s. Once engine of Mig21 was dameged in air. Pilot ignored order to eject (said, I hear nothing) and landed plane stalling engine before toch down (risky strategy, but pilot was really cool). Thermal stress melted bolts and there were drops of metall inside engine, on turbine blades... My father had to do snapshots inside engine to show them on plant.

Thanks everyone who correctly identified the picture as 12 point 12mm. Found one at Sears last night and fits like a glove. Sadly, we have no fabulous parting gifts for our contestants . See you next time on "What was Henry Thinking?"
