What trans is in it and from what year range trucks can I get a suitable replacement?

Probably the Mazda built 5 speed. I think the Mitsubishi ones were older models. Check pics here. You can probably shop from several years of the Ranger.

Note there are two models-- Ranger size & F150 size, you need the Ranger model and they are not interchangeable.

Or you could find a 2005+ V6 Mustang that's been stuffed into the wall and get the entire set up out of it. A Tremec of some type, not sure of model number, better shifting, but of course, you'll have to reach out the back window to shift, or move the shifter.... Just a random not-so-helpful thought.....

 

you didnt say if the truck was 4x4 or not but you can go here Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market to see what years fit if its 4x4 you could also get one out of an older explorer
