4r70w tranny differences

hi all my 97 expedition tranny died what is the difference between a 4r70w that went in a car, a 4x2 , or 4x4 trucks .a guy at work has a low mile fullsize ford car 4r70w i can get cheap .can i use it is the question thanks kevin

What year is it? If you are going thru the expense/trouble of changing it, the MY 1998 and newer (up to 2003, I think) is a much better 4R70W tranny!! I just installed a 98 in my 97 Mark VIII... runs much better (smoother) and my fuel milage got better too. I DID have to re-pin the electrical connector.

As far as car tranny into a lt duty truck?? I would think the tranny is the same, but the length of tailshaft may be different...measure, measure, measure.
