Is there a non aftermarket alt I can get for my truck? I recently put a 460 in and decided to go E fan. It better suits my needs than a mechanical, but it puts the hurt on my stock alternator, and wiring to for that matter. What can I do for cheap to remedy this?
I put an alt. from a 1993 Ford Taurus with a 3.8. Its internal regulated and bolts up. Just had to change the pulley and got a couple wiring ends for Ford. $35 for a 130 amps.

Now this is what I'm talking about! How can I be sure how that the alt. I get out of a similar taurus will also be 130 amps? Also what has to be done to eliminate the voltage regulator since the new one is internally regulated?
All you need to do is tell them it is a 3.8. They all have the 3.8 because the big cooling fans they had. I removed the reg. off the fender, hooked the light green wire from the old harness to the new one. I also ran a 1 or 2 ga wire back to the starting solinoid. look here http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/pub...ALT_wiring.gif

Yep I did the 3g swap too, if your at a wrecker grab the heavy guage wire too, it will have a factory fusible link near the battery end-that way you won't need the mega fuse-then trim the wire to length to fit. If you google 3g alternator swap you will find out all the particulars.
I have had mine for over a year now, and it works great!
My boss has alot of random stuff like this lying around, How can I identify a 3g if I don't know what its from. Also I have access to an 82 bronco with a 351w that had air, would this be a good canidate?
82 would be a good chance it is the same style of alt. that you have now. I did a little digging, this site explains it well, with pics and additional links.
Note the 3g alt. case-the true 130 alt. will have 2 holes in the casting next to the pulley. It is all there, be prepared to do some reading and such-then you will have it made! 3G Alternator Upgrade - BB.BC4x4.COM
It explains in there somewhere the "history" of Ford alts. from the 1g, 2g, 3g, and now the 4g.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
Perfect! Thank you so much, this is what I was looking for! Maybe next week, (get paid then) I will head to the junk yard and see what I can find, or if I'm patient something is bound to come through my work on its way to the scrap yard with one on it.
