Can anybody tell me how to get the drive assembly spring off a 56 F100 starter? I have the drive assembly off the starter shaft but can not figure how to replace the spring. It always nice when a $8 part breaks keeps you from starting. Good thing for a 3 on the tree and a friendly push!

Dunno about aftermarket parts, but Ford never sold the Bendix Drive spring separately on trucks with Y Block or OHV 6 cylinder engines, it only came with the drive.
The only Bendix Drive spring part numbers I can find are for flathead 6 & V8 engines.
ICM-11350-C > > replaced by > > C1AZ-11350-A .. Bendix Drive (Motorcraft SD-3) OBSOLETE, no longer available from FoMoCo.
I did an internet search for the C1AZ-11350-A Bendix Drive still shown by Ford dealers (new originals-NOS-new old stock).
The closest dealer to you that still has one is Fred Grande Ford in Richmond MI.
Rusty Wallace Ford in Newport TN has 5 NOS / 10 other US Ford dealers also have some.
Note: The part numbers listed above are correct for the original starters used 1954/62. If the starter or the engine has been changed, the drive may be different.
Well first you have to purchase a couple of items, one gallon of isopropyl alcohol, quart of lacquer thinner, surgical gloves and mask, and a pressurized cylinder of helium. Wearing the gloves and mask to avoid contamination from your body to the starter, then wash all the parts first with the alcohol, and then with the thinner, air drying at exactly 12.5 psi via air hose after each washing, repeat until dizzy, then inhale helium until your voice sounds like Donald Duck and give the starter to a buddy to fix.
Sorry BFOOTER03, I just couldn’t help myself! Most of us (me) are **** and sometimes we take ourselves too serious.
OK once again I am voting for a northern boarder fence blocking of crazy Canadians like Mr funny *** here! I will take your suggestions under serious consideration F1 but hopefully I will find someone who has a better solution if not them its to the helium I go.
Yea as I recall there is a snap ring under that bronze bushing to remove it. Then you remove the Shoulder Bolts from the spring to take it off. You should purchase two springs, carry one in your truck just incase.
I'm not sure but the starter pictured is not the same as mine. I wish mine was that easy. Not sure but assume the 56 Y-block must of had a different starter.
My manual stated that its no replacable but it is. It took some work but for $8 you can get a spsing from Midwest early ford. Took me about 30 mins to get the drive to come loose and another 30min to get the C clips off.
1. If you compress the spring there is a rod that holds the drive on the shaft. Remove that and the drive comes off.
2. There is a C clip that holds the spring shaft into the drive piece that will need removed.
3. The next C clip is on opposite end of the spring. You will need to compress the end to remove it.
4. The last C clip is at the end of the the spring and will also need to be compressed to remove.
Hope this helps others and will save you some money in the future.
