This may be a dumb question, but how do you remove the drive assembly from the starter motor shaft? My starter is shot but the drive assembly seems OK. I see a pin through the end of the shaft but the "collar" partially covers the pin. This is for a 1962 F350, 292. I have a shop manual for the 62, but it in hiding at this time !!!
I * believe* that you press down on the washer around the perimiter, and the pin can then be pushed out of the way. Then slide it off the motor shaft. This is from memory, and we all know ... What day is today? I like ice cream. Are we there yet?
This is the 'folo-thru' drive that has the gear end towards the starter motor, with the larger part of the bendix behind (rear of) the flywheel, right? Either way, there is a spring-load that retains the pin which must be defeated. Wow, it has been a long time since I've messed with one of those.
When you get the new one, assuming that is in the cards, you will see how to remove the old one for sure.

Reason: add thought
Now that I think more about it, I sort of remember using a Crescent (adjustable) wrench on the shaft, and sort of standing on the wrench to move the springload out of the way, and then being able to remove the pin. This is from sometime in the late '60s, so it may be sort of ambiguous...
