Question, To time these, do you need both the luminosity probe (i guess thats what goes in the glowplug hole) and the pulse injector sensor? Or do you just use one or the other and if so which method is better? Thanks
Normally the 7.3 was timed by the Pulse method only........
DieselDon's info
If you have the original emission label on your valve covers, they gave the max pump fuel flow rate in mm3 at rated HP.
As I recall 6.9 was about 48mm3 sea level and 44mm3 for high altitude pump
7.3NA was about 54mm3 and 49mm3 for high altitude
7.3 IDI Turbo - 58 mm3 ( this is out of the Ford book )
ok i have a dumb question about the timing meter that i have. i havent really used it since i bought it and its kind of a learning experience for me. when you turn the meter on to see what the timing is set at, you can turn the pump one way and it will read like -1.5 and the other way it will read like just 1.5. which way is atdc and wich way is btdc? another question is, is the 8-9 degrees for luminosity probe or pulse method?
my meter is a lumy/mag ll, snap-on MT 1480. ok since the timing is to be set at 0.5 atdc, is the off set the same as the 6.9 for the #1 cylender as the 7.3 (20) and what rpm do you set it at? thanks dave for the info you have been alot of help since i bought my first truck.
What kinda fancy dangled witch craft is this? I work at an IH dealer and had to time a 6.9 recenly the guys that rebuilt the engine put the timing gear in 180 out and couldn't figure why it was smoking. All the old timers seemed to think using a luminasity probe ot a tach'n'time or any other light was a waste of time and some said that they hardly worked. So I timed it by sound smoke and how it ran. I mention this just to let you know if after using one of these timing devices if you truck doesn't run right there probly isn't a problem with it you may just have to play with the timing a bit. Also these trucks have a two pice balance wich can throw the readings off.
