351W question

I tried posting this in the 352W section but did not get the info I needed. I am getting ready to fire up my 351W in my "50 F1. I have a few questions about the water pump. I connected the hoses for the upper and lower radiator ports but noticed two smaller ports on the upper left quadrant of the water pump. I am told those are for the heater. I also notice a port to the left of the large port going to the upper radiator hose. What is this port for? I plan to do a loop on the two ports at the water pump until I install a heater but do not know what to do with the port in the thermostat housing.

I think the outlet on the stat housing is for the water pump bypass?

That's exactly right guys! It is a thermostat bypass. On a side note, make sure you get some oil with some zinc in it, or use a zinc additive!!!! There has been many threads on this topic. I'd hate to see you ruin your camshaft. Also if you didnt know DONT let it idle keep it between 1,200 RPM's and 2,000 RPM's. Then change the break in oil.

I'm assuming you have a "rebuilt" engine? If not, you dont have to pay attention to the break in process, but you still need oil with zinc in it.

Yep, 2 bolts hold the t/stat cover on, the cover has 1 large outlet and 1 smaller..maybe 1" outlet, the bypass hose goes from the cover to the upper of the 2 pipes on the water pump.........least thats the way it goes together on my 89....same thing I suspect on just about all the small-block fords. The hose is a 90 degree , with just a slight diameter difference at each end, any parts place knows the hose.. the lower is a heater hose, but to be honest, don't know if it is an inlet, or outlet.....

Thanks for the input. I did some further research and believe the lower outlet on the water pump go to the heater core inlet. Coming from the heater core it goes back to the engine. Does anyone know where it ends up?

Zinc in the oil is what keeps the flat tappet camshafts from wearing out. It's an additive. The hippy tree huggers are taking it out of the oil cause all the late model junk has roller cams. They say that zinc ruins the catalytic convertors? Anyway, there was a thread on here a while back, but I'm not good at the search feature. Maybe someone else will chime in here and help us out?
