Headlights on with unlock

Well here I am at it once again with a very pointless mod that no one has probably done yet...but anyways here it goes. So on my 2004 F150, the head lights come on when you unlock the truck with the keyless entry. My F250 does not do this. So what I am asking is has anyone ever tried to jump a few wire around to make this work...The lights coming on with unlock would be great. I often leave for work around 5:15 and it is always dark. If only those headlights would come on when I unlock the truck. Anyways if anyone has any suggestions then let me know. If not ill just have to stumble through the dark on the days i drive the 250 lol.
thanks for the time

Well, this isn't the best way...but...How about taking a wire from the bed light (the one that turns on when you unlock the doors) and run it to a relay, then tie the relay to the battery and to the headlights? Probably want to put a diode in the line going from the headlights to the relay. I may wire this up next weekend...I'll let you know.

Is this a function of the GEM Module that could be turned on? What would you need to access the GEM and manipulate its functions?

The relay idea from the bedlight would work. Just be sure to use the diodes and you should be good... Does the interior light come on too? You could use that wire.

Do you have a position on your light switch that sets the headlights to turn on automatically when it gets dark? Do you have a little black sensor in the middle of the dash next to the windshield?

My truck has the auto lights like that but they dont come on when you hit the unlock button. Is there something you can do to it if the truck has the auto lights?

No, not with the unlock button. With the ignition switch. Just put something black or dark over the sensor, like a pop bottle cap. That fools the lights into coming on because the sensor thinks its dark out. Leave the light switch in that position. The lights will come on automatically when you start the truck, and switch off automatically about 30 seconds after you turn off the engine and get out of the truck. You now have daylight running lights, as well as instant lights when you start the truck day or night. Try it out. Thats the way my 02 250 works.

I second Neal's idea coming off the cargo light or the interior light. Good luck

Sorry about that. I didn't think there was much difference between unlocking the door and starting the engine.

The idea of wiring a relay into the courtesy lights may be your best bet. Mainly, because it will come on with the unlock button on the FOB, turn off when you turn the key and also light up when you remove the key.

A different approach would be to get a 12vdc TDR (Time Delay Relay) and have the trigger come from the unlock solenoid itself.

There are already headlight relays.

Why not just add the diodes to the existing relays?

I'm almost certain that the headlight switch supplies +12 to these, not a ground, so diodes from the dome lamp feed wire at the GEM to the headlight relay coils would seem to be the way to go.

Of course, this means that anytime the dome lamp is on, so are the headlights, and that may not be the desired logic.
