test drove a 6.4 yesterday

and i must say, i was pretty impressed with it. but can someone tell me why in gods name the tach goes all the way to 6k with no redline on it anywhere??? thats like putting a 150 mph speedo in a pinto if you ask me lol. i do think it was way too quiet though. my girlfriend even commented that it didnt sound like a "real truck" when we were stopped at a red light.

ya they're pretty sweet!
Except the sound. just had my girlfriend listen to a passing 02 F250 w/ a straight pipe and she wants me to get a straight pipe now... shucks... lol
apparently the tach redline went away in 2005, because the PCM controlls it all the way anyways. kinda dumb, redlines are nice to have. the redline works out to about 3800

Oh the 6.4 is a sweet quick motor! I have driven 2 different ones both f-250s and the dash mpg said 8.5 on one and 6.5 on the other.... ouch haha. Our ford diesel mechanic drive one at 60mph for 200miles and avereged 10.5 mpg. And I complain about 15 in town and 18 on the hwy!

Ya my 17 average doesnt sound too bad now!
But from what i hear, it levels out after the DPF gets "broken in"
Isnt it an active regeneration system? Ex: diesel into the tailpipe?

it definately had more get up and go than my 7.3. but that being said, id take my 7.3 over it any day of the week. sounds better, better durability, better mpg's, and will tow anything i can hook to it. and best of all, its paid for.

thought this was interesting too. i was browsing the 6.4 forum and came across this post. apparently the guy has had a 7.3, 6.0 and now the 6.4 still thinks the best one is the 7.3.

--I was just venting a little on making a huge mistake and upgrading my 04 to the 08. I wish I had kept the 04, by the way its back in the shop again. the best truck I ever had was the Ford 7.3.

Own my 7.3 and drive a 6.0 at work that they will replace in a couple months with a 6.4, no real complaints with the 6.0 but the say the 6.4 runs even better. I get about 14 mpg with the 6.0 but I run it pretty hard because I don't put the fuel in it.

So now i saw the 6.4 is a common rail instead of the huei system. now does this mean now the powerstrokes will be able to make big power like the cummins and duramax? i gues i should say big power easily.

I read about 1 that makes over 500hp just without the exhaust stuff and programming. Is it Spartan that has it? I cant remember

i got to drive one, my dream truck besides the motor. f-350 regular cab 4x4 dually with a six speed. besides the fact that the salesman sucked at driving a standard, he stalled once, and every shift was bone jarring. the ride and the drive was pretty nice, and the truck really seemed to perform well. But for a 38K price tag i could have one BADA$$ 7.3the way that i always wanted.

I've done some reading in those forums as well.
Race tune and dpf delete- they have layed down 545hp at the rear wheels!
That's one hell of a tuner!
keep in mind the computer controlls fueling, the VGT on the larger of sequential twins, the dpf programming, and a few other important things.
Incredible. they're talking about a few turbo upgrades that could put it over 60psi. right now it opens both WG's at 33psi.
its awesome!

I drove one about a month ago and they haul a$$. I went into the 6.4 forum and with the dpf taken out they are getting over 20mpg, not bad for a heavy truck. Might be time for my dads company to upgrade.....

ya but i guess that you can reinstall the dpf before you bring it in and there is no way of telling that it was removed in the first place. Or at least that is what i concluded after reading a few threads.
