Question Looking 4 Cheap Posi !!!

I have a 1979 F-150 with a 3.00 geared 9 inch rear end that I'm building for my wife ! It has a 1987 5.0 (E7TE) roller motor that I've ported both sides (intake & exhaust) ,added headers and a "68 4bbl intake from a Mustang with a Holley of course ,the truck also has a bulldog 4spd , what I'm looking to do is toturn my rear end into a Posi unit without spending a bunch of $$ or doing a crap job like welding the spiders , I heard of an article years ago called $1.98 posi , something about adding shims to the spider gears , but not sure about it and can't find anything about it !Does anyone know what is the cheapist way to get a Posi without spending major $$ !? I'd like to keep the 3.00 gearing or going higher 2.75 or so, for fuel economy with the bulldog first taking off is no problem ,but I'd like to have the Posi !! Can anyone help ??? Thanks in advance !! ...cougar...

7018 or 6011 is going to be the cheapest option.

Unhappy nevermind

Nevermind folks I thought I explained myself in the orig.post ! All I've gotten in responce to this post is correction on my usage of the wrong terminology and suggestions to do what I clearly stated in the orig. that I didn't want to do ! It seems that you folks would be more willing to help out a fellow Ford owner (thats all I own 'cept for my Harley) ,than to ridicule one, oh well Thanks guys ! ...cougar...

ummmmmm. not sure if ive ever seen a cheap LSD. not one that works well anyways.
stockers are ok. might try to find an OEM piece, or a used aftermarket one. E-bay and Craigslist are really good places to find a deal. also, car shows and races might be a good place to ask. someone may be upgrading to a locker, looking to sell their current LSD. as for the shims, i dont know anything about it. could ask around here in memphis if you like.

Here's what you got:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...heap-posi.html

Certainly, you did get the razz about "posi", and you did get the (IMO poor) suggestion to weld the spiders, but you also got some additional info.

What you want is the $1.98 "posi", right? I searched for it, found some links, but NOTHING concrete. Like I said before, if it were that cheap, simple, reliable, safe--that's the way all limited slips would be made.

If you want a safe, reliable, functioning limited slip, it is going to cost you $300 or better, UNLESS you happen upon a good used unit at the scrappy.

Sorry, you don't always get the answer you want.

Good luck with your project.

Well I am sorry. I know what you want to hear but I speak the truth. Look around, put the word out locally, try a wanted ad in your local news paper. I got my stock posi for free, what can I say, my boss is a nice guy. he had it laying around and said "take it" Not everyone has my dumb luck haha.

Reality says if your very patient and know the right people maybe you can get a deal but if you really want a posi you may have to show some green....

I know how you feel. as redgreen would say: remember, we're all in this together

Agree.

The OP does not, repeat, does not want welded spiders... he has a very valid reason if you read his first post.

Thanks for decodeing the rod numbers....

i knew a guy in tech school that had a ranger and said he put extra thrust washers behind the spider gears and swore it gave him a poor mans locker and still aloud him to go around corners.

ive seen a few around craigslist and ebay for $150 or so. the best LSD would be in the form of a truetrac from detroit, but those are $450 and obviously out of your pricerange. I think that the cheapest way to get both wheels turnin aside from stealing an LSD or getting one given to you would be to weld it up. even then you would probably use more than $2 worth of rods anyway. good luck buddy, i have been looking for an LSD for my 9" for over three years now.
