I am looking to upgrade my rear differential to a limited slip/locker. I'm tired of the lack of traction with my "one wheel wonder". I am looking at the Ford Trac-Lok and the Eaton Posi as my choices. These are both rebuildable and use clutch packs. The Eaton seems to be beefier clutch wise and the Ford spider gear pinion wise--2 vs 3 pinions.
Any thoughts- good or bad about these units? Any other suggestions/recommendations?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, but not necessarily have to get from Ford itself.
I have researching and pricing these units. The Eaton is a bit higher, but may be worth the additional cost. The Eaton's spring pressure can be increased easily and has carbon fiber clutches. I would like some feedback on this unit or any others that someone has had a good experience with. I am also debating the need for a 3 pinion spider set. Most differentials are 2 pinion anyway and were until the Superduties, with the 10.5 Sterling were introduced.
Greg (SuperDoodie) has "Tru Trac rear" listed in his sig. I would think that would be the Eaton/Detroit TrueTrac, right? If he doesn't chime in you could contact him about his opinion.
Hey Roland, FWIW, my factory LS is working great. I recently changed the fluid and I put in the Mobil 1 syn with the friction modifier already in it and it works great right out of the bottle. I didn't have to add any friction modifier to it. Absolutely zero chatter no matter how I turn and instant posi when I 'break the tires free' accidently of course........
I'm pretty sure that mine is a TRU-Track. I'd have to ask Cory to be certain, but I believe thats what he said it was. You'll love LS Roland. I can't believe that they didn't put them in all the psd's.
One review I read about the Detroit Truetrac was that it sometimes does lock in and you have to tap the brake to get the power transfer to the other wheel. I would consider one of those if someone could give me their firsthand experience with them. Clutch types seems to be more consistent in this respect. The Ford Trac-Lok LS and the Eaton Posi are both clutch type and can be preloded tighter to get a better engagement.
I can get a new Eaton Posi for ~$680(shipped) with carrier brgs, shims, and cover gasket. The Ford is ~$600 (shipped) and would still need to buy new carrier brgs. Really only ~$50 difference. I don't mine paying for something if I get my money's worth.
Mine is working flawlessly. I've got Schaeffer's oil and ford additive. I'll double check with Cory to make sure what mine is. I kinda like the sound of the Eaton for the money.
I hate the stock LS on the SDs, its basically like an open diff except for those rare times when it does engage. My dads chevy has an E-Locker stock and I like it, havent tested it offroad much due to the crappy street tires.
