Don't remember the exact numbers, but I belief I've used some 5/8" shackles that have a SAFE WLL of 3 3/4 tons which is about 7,500 or so. Average truck doesn't weigh more than 6,000 pounds, and if you aren't stuck bad and do a steady pull, a 5/8" shackle is plenty.
isnt firehose cotton canvas wrapped rubber? nylon and lots of other synthetics would melt in the heat that firehose is designed to withstand,so they use natural fibers,BUT,you dont see natural fiber ropes used at all in applications requiring high strength.....tow lines, mooring lines, anchor lines all use either nylon, polyester, spectra,or wire rope. if you use rope, knots weaken it dramatically, splices are far stronger. as far as those $10 tow hooks go,id imagine the hook itself isnt usually the weak link, how about the bolts? grade 8 bolts, good SAE or USS hardened washers, solid mounting points on the vehicles frame, making sure the pull is inline with the hook and its mounting bolts, making sure the line, cable, chain etc is deep in the "U' of the hook and not on the point of the hook(its not a fish hook, after all),and so on,under most circumstances they should be fine.........But,thats JMHO....Bob
On the home made tow strap note I've got a couple hundred ft. of the "rope" (not the right word) used for pulling cable through conduit. It's rated at 18,00 lbs I was thinking about braiding some together for a strap. Think it would work?
making straps and "think it would work?" isn't something I play around with much, people get killed doing that kind of stuff, I've been wacked in the face by a piece of wet broken srap that came through the open slider and you can't believe how bad it hurts, 50 or 60 bucks will get you a very nice strap that won't break and last you a very long time if properly taken care of. not trying to flame you, just how I feel on the subject...
