What are you guys using? I need to get a good sturdy one asap and those ten dollar chrome hooks that bolt on with two grade five bolts don't look all that appealing to me.
I usually use a pintle hook on a good bumper, but, here is another method.
Get 1/4" channel 4-8 inches wide, cut the length to fit inside the frame, flange to flange. Then slide it inside the frame rail, some times this requires removing the front bumper, cut a flap, sliding the metal cross member in, rewelding the frame horn.
You can use 1/2" bolts (1 each side on the 4") to hold it in place along with the two tow hook bolts.
Front reciever here too.
I got a little creative and used a late 90's F150 rear reciever that I cut down to fit between the frame horns. Once I turned the reciever upside down, it fit perfectly behind the front license plate. I made a license plate mount that plugs into the reciever (that keeps the cops happy), and when I head off-road, I install d-ring shackle.

Did you weld it to the Frame, or Bolt it?
I'm working on building a new bumper with the receiver bult into the center and recessed back between the frame. That way when I install the winch (with receiver pipe and frame already built) the front plate for the winch mount will sit flush with the front of the bumper. When the winch is removed (so it could be installed on the back, to pull you back out of an ugly situation) I will have a plate that drops into the receiver on the front, to fill the gap. (This also reduces the weight of the winch on the front of the truck, when not out puddle jumping)
I use two tow hooks off the 88-98 chev (yeah i know its a chev part on a ford but ford never made tow hooks in those days) there bolted with two grade 8 half inch bolts in hole i drilled in the frame, I hade to notch out my bumper so the hooks would clear but i think it look mean.
I welded mine. I did not have enough room for fasteners. The steering box is on the way, and the heads for the bolts would have required more fabrication than I was willing to perform.
With a 78/9 steering box, this hitch could easilly be bolted in, but I used a saginaw, that sits outside of the frame rail, and it is tight where it is mounted, and 4 bolt heads behind the box would have made this combo a nightmare.
OK, that's good to know. I haven't removed the front factory bumper yet on the 91, to see what all is going to be involved. I just know somethings gotta happen to the front end...... With the lift kit I can barely reach the dip stick to check oil, a bumper out front that you can stand on. can be very usefull, in a tall truck.
I will probably do the same and weld the receiver in place. Then bolt the tube bumper on.

I've seen enough of those on stock trucks bent straight or broke clean off that I want nothing to do with them. I'm way to hard on things

I really like this, tough, out of the way, I will be keeping my eye out in the jy for reciever hitches... we'll see what else is working to
agreed, I don't remember what I saw it on but it was closed with a big thing sticking out in the middle for easy tow strap hook up, looked to me like that tang could break off and become a bullet, just a thought, never seen it. I think this was on a 2500 ram.
