For those of you who read one of my most recent threads, you know of my transmission problems. I have an ATS 5 star converter with 2000 rpm stall speed, and complete suncoast upgraded rebuild kit including the billet input shaft. I broke the center shaft while hauling about 10,000#, and decided to floor it @ 5 mph, smoking my 37's into 3rd gear when the center shaft broke. I got a new center shaft yesterday, and got it installed, and the transmission in my truck tonight. I was all fired up to go take it for a test drive, and found that I had no line pressure. I could get a trickle of fluid through everything, but I'm pretty sure I put everything back the way it's supposed to be. I hooked my auto meter fuel pressure sensor to the pressure port on the trans, and no matter what gear it was in, it never even registered. The only thing I didn't carefully inspect upon assembly was the torque converter. could something have broken inside it to cause the pump to not work? I'm guessing the pump is not working, or maybe plugged before the pressure sensor port. There is a trickle of fluid there, but that's it. I also took an air blower and blew in there. It blew the dipstick out, and sprayed atf all over the engine. Also the tow/haul light never came on while testing. I even had it up to about 3500 rpm's for about 30 sec. in gear with the rear tires in the air to see if the pump would catch. I think that's about it. any HELPFUL advice would be appreciated.
I've got it out on the bench right now, and the pump looks fine. fluid looks great. We're draining the converter right now to check for visible damage. I guess we'll call ATS and see what they say. I was hoping not to have to pull it again, but I have to have the truck this weekend. This problem is stumping me, so if you have any more suggestions, even if they might sound dumb, let me know. BTW I wasn't worried about burning fluid because if it wasn't being pumped, the clutches wouldn't have pressure to burn, or cause contact on any other parts. maybe I was wrong in this assumption. who knows? It looks like we're okay though.
It could be the pump drive spline in the torque converter. If it isn't turning the pump shaft the pump isn't going to produce any pressure. Even with a major leak inside the trans there would be plenty of fluid at the pressure port, it's ahead of most of the rest of the trans.
Thanks for your input guys. You pointed right to the pump, the source of the problem. It was my stupid mistake. My stator shaft was cracked, and I had a good '06 torqshift other than the cracked case, so I switched out the back half with the shaft and tried to make it work. Well, I'm glad I kept my instructions for the shift kit, because it specifically describes what I did, and not to do. the pump sections will bolt up perfectly, but design changes in '05 re-directed fluid, and when I combined the '03 and '06 pumps, the fluid dead headed inside the pump. we got everything together on the complete '06 pump, and she's running like a scalded dog. Thanks.
