Yeah, that's not too far. It's nice to have a mech that can have you back up and running is less that 48 hours after you call him. If you need something, let me know and I will hook you up with him.
Thank you sir, I really gotta keep my fingers crossed with my usually perfect PSD, in the last three months with an act of pure brilliance on my part I've spent at least 3 times the value of my Vdub on it just getting it roadworthy......LOL
Lastly, any ideas on why it blew and what I can do to prevent it?????
Looking at you sig, I would say that you really need a bigger turbo.
Having said that, I would at least make sure that your wastegate is working properly and keep the boost limited to 24 psi or less.
Too much drive pressure is what killed your turbo, IMO.
Barry, just saw your thread and the result. I'm sure that you have a big grin on with the feeling of relief now that the truck is fixed.
I didn't see the miles on your truck in your signature. Sometimes things just wear out. Don't be hard on yourself. I doubt that you did anything that would be detrimental to your turbo.

Dan, I guess I am going to have to show my ignorance, but what do you mean. I always ran/run my turbo stock, hardly ever sees 25lbs. I guess what I am asking is how my mods could cause turbo failure. It was definitely seals blown. No oil at all on the inlet side of the exhaust, the outet side was covered. Both wheels had some play in them, no noticeable damage to either.

Mark, I was in the 80E. That is where it stay most of the time. I had just merged into traffic and never come close to WOT. Felt something that felt like I hit a small patch of ice then when I looked back, seen smoke pouring out.
Drive pressure is the exhaust manifold pressure that drives the turbine.
From what I have been able to gather here on FTE is that the stock turbo has about twice as much exhaust pressure as boost.
That pressure imbalance pushes the exhaust wheel against the bushing and too much pressure is what eventually wears them out. Then you get the mosquito fogger that you experienced.
The only way to 100% prevent that in the future is to make sure the boost stays withing factory specs, or get a turbo that is built to take the abuse, or get a van turbo with a larger exhaust housing that will greatly reduce the drive pressure.
Thanks, that does make sense. Wish I would have had time and money to upgrade, but I really am not wanting to make more power. I am very happy with what I have. Not the fastest, but faster than I need to go. I can make smoke when I want to and save some fuel when I need to. The guy that did my work said he has worked for ford for 8 years and only seen this three times on the 7.3. One had only 23K on it and was completely stock. He thought the others were stock as well, but wasn't sure. I am just glad it happened around home and not on the road to who know where.
