I'm not sure, I think that since it is has as much play as it does and is hitting the housing, I'm thinking a new one is the way to go. I just heard from my mech pal. $1000.00 parts and labor. $100.00 labor $900.00 for the turbo and will have it done by Sat evening. What do you guys think? It will be OEM or Stock.,
That is a great price for the labor if the rear clamp is as stubborn as mine was.
Otherwise it is a fair price.
As I said earlier, back in service Sat. is a big plus. If you go that route make sure to ask if he'll let you keep the old turbo. Wouldn't hurt to have a core laying around for when the time comes to upgrade.
I didn't ask, but I'm sure that price included them keeping the old core.

Fair is all I ever get, but will have to do. With my luck, if I tried it, it would take a D8 Cat and 7 undocumented workers to get the clamp off. My father in law is a retired diesel mech (heavy equipment) and would help, but he is leaving in the morning for a week at the beach. And Dan, thanks, you called it first and other than the site being slow this morning, this and folks like all of you guys are great. Reps to all when I can.
Wow Barry I missed this one yesterday, sorry to hear about your Turbo Woes glad to see you are getting it fixed quick too bad you can't have some down time for her. It would be a great time for a new one or atleast an ATS Housing or WW. We had a Mack Dump Truck at work had the same thing happen earlier this week, she looked like a train heading down the road drove it like that for three days until a cop pulled him over for exsessive smoke lol.
here's what mine looked like when i pulled it a few months ago. luckily i caught mine before it was totally toast. no visible damage to the turbine or exhaust housing, and the compressor wheel looked slightly worse for wear, but no bent vanes or gouges in compressor housing. i haven't rebuilt it, but dropped in a used on off ebay for cheap, that works as well if not better than the one that went out. anyway, heres what mine looked like.
and it certainly smoked like a freight train too. i'm sure everyone i passed was thinking "stupid diesels making all that damn smoke polluting the environment." mine had been occassionally making a metallic tinking noise, and when i checked for side to side play there was a little, but nothing extreme. i drove it to town and back and noticed no problems. i had a job the next day and had to pull my landscape trailer loaded with lumber about 40 miles round trip(from albemarle to mt pleasant and back). well, i didn't think i'd make it home. on my way to the job, it really started to smoke, and there was a loss of power. i had already bought the ebay turbo, and it was actually out for delivery that very day. about 5 that afternoon i was leaving the jobsite, and i didn't make it a few miles before i pulled over to check things out. i really didn't want to drop a hundred bucks on a tow, when i knew i had a used (in good shape) turbo to drop back in. finally made it home and my turbo was sitting on my doorstep. i was going to wait until the next day to install it, but couldn't wait. i waited an hour, and climed up onto the engine, and had the replacement in in less than an hour. it was a little dark when i was done, but i'm glad i didn't wait, it monsooned all day on saturday and sunday. one on the few times that things worked just right.
Should be back on the road tomorrow, now the question arises, did I do something to cause it and more important, what can I do to stop it from happening again? Never run waste gate unplugged.
Damn it doesn't look too good. It's not supposed to be wet with oil.
Man, I had oil dripping out of my exhaust pipe so I can only imagine what it looks like inside. My tailgate and bumper is covered with that high dollar syn. oil. But I will tell you this, syn oil burns a real pretty white. And in my case, thick enough that northbound traffic on I85 backed way off my bumper just to be able to see the road.
If I don't forget, I will try to get some pics of the turbo before it gets turned in.
i missed this one Barry..my girlfriend bet me i couldn't stay off of this site for a whole weekend..(dont tell her im here now) glad you found the problem and she is being fixed...

Thanx Ron, I only live a short distance from Barry and he's been kind to me in the past so turnabout is only fair, right?
Well, just picked her up and all is well. I will tell you this, black smoke looks a hell of a lot better than that white smoke. Unless you have seen what a blown turbo seal looks like, you can not imagine the amount of smoke that thing can make. I haven't seen a mosquito hear since Thursday, Come to think of it, I haven't seen any birds either.
Thanks to all that jumped in for help and support, and Mark, thanks for the offer.
I did notice that I think I have a bit more turbo surge than before for some reason.
Got to go change the oil since I added dino oil to drive it over to the shop. Got to get that mixed oil out.
Lastly, any ideas on why it blew and what I can do to prevent it?????
Barry, you're more than welcome. I'm not as close to you as I was a few days ago. I left Gold Hill and moved back to Matthews. Not all that much further, but a little bit, maybe 20 miles further.
Yeah, that's not too far. It's nice to have a mech that can have you back up and running is less that 48 hours after you call him. If you need something, let me know and I will hook you up with him.
