hi , looking for some help . i just bought my first diesel truck. 93 f250,ats turbo, auto trans, runs great with LOTS of power---until i hook up to my5th wheel (aprox. 8000 lbs.) . pulls it ok power wise, but under load ,even a light load it surges enough to make a sailor sea sick. it is not noticable running empty. i also noticed that the temp guage climbs up to just past the word normal when pulling(why didn't they just put numbers on it?) runs right in the middle running empty. not sur if there is any connection between the 2. any help appreciated. thanks
old_rodder,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Are you noticing a big change in noise levels when it surges?
If the temp gauge is running high, part of it could be the fan clutch locking and unlocking.
dave, i notice no noise or tone change, but if i kick it out of od then it seems faster with the rpm increase. it also started hard right after towing a couple times, it was only shut off for afew minutes and was real warm when i stopped. as far as the temp is concerned it really just acts as if the radiator is partly plugged. maybe its not really all that hot..... im gonna have to put a real guage on it to tell ,but i may just pull the rad and have it rodded first. the fan clutch shouldn't make much diff at 60 mph should it?
but i may just pull the rad and have it rodded first.
93 rads were not to be rodded due to they have turbulators punched into the tubes to assist in dissipating heat......
the fan clutch shouldn't make much diff at 60 mph should it
The fan clutch is heat operated at all speeds.......
What thermostat is installed, must be IH or Ford only........
Diesel engine coolant temperature at the top of the radiator where hose attaches after high rpm or under load condition for 20 minutes should be (195-237*F) 91-114*C nice time to have a temperature reading point and shoot tool.
My 1993 IDI was surging under load before I replaced the return lines and cleaned the injectors. It also appeared normal when I was not towing anything. Now all appears to be running great, no surging under load and greater power as well.
found the hi-temp problem....pulled the rad and the front of it was 75% covered with a solid layer of crud. couldn't even see the fins. havent got it back in yet. could the fan be kickin in n out rapidly causing the surge ???? also ,harold, what lines were replaced and why? and were the inj. pulled or just run chemical thru them. i'm new and green on diesels. old cars ...no problem
My return lines were leaking which reading on this site seems to be a common problem and as long as I was replaceing the return lines and O-Rings anyhow I cleaned the injectors as well. (the return lines are the black cloth covered rubber lines connected to the top of the injectors) I got the kit from diesel care "http://www.dieselcare.net/index.html" for $35, they used to have a link from this site.
Sounds like a fuel delivery problem when under load (max fuel requirement). If you have not already done so I would fit a new fuel filter element and also look at the air filter. I would also suspect the lift pump, if the filter does not improve matters. Do a search, there are blenty of threads here on testing the lift pump for both pressure and flow. Replacing the return lines would do no harm and tossing a can of injector cleaner in with the fuel would also help.
