I'm getting conflicting reports all over the internet about what to put in my E40D in the 97 F350.
I have to replace all the transmission oil cooler lines, so I am going to do a full fluid change. But unsure about what to buy.
I hear E40D is very fincky with ATF and it doesn't like Mercon V. Apparently, regular Mercon is not available anymore. So what I should buy? Some say Dexron III? I want to go synthetic. Would Mobil 1 ATF be OK in an E40D? Any E40D owners here care to comment?
The fact that Mercon is no longer licensed by Ford is a legality and has nothing to do with chemistry. BP's Castrol division now has a "universal" ATF to cover older Dexron/Mercon applications. Other oil companies have similar products.
