it was time to change the trans fluid on my 1995 e350 with e4od trans i plow with it and it was time went to advance auto parts got new filter and fluid i always put in atf they told me that i need mercon 3 so i baught it went to my friend who ownes a gas station and gave him the stuff and he changer it i was short a little fluid and he put about a pint of mercon 5 to fill it ... a few days latter all of a sudden stated shifting hard cheaked fluid and it looked ok thaught i was loosing it the next day i thought the trans was going to fall out of the truck.
ok i plowed with it and i thought i broke it plowing went to another buddy picked up a 1996 e4od put it in works fine used atf fluid so far ok...
started to take the original trans apart and found out that the mix of the different trans fluids ate all the o rings in the trans called advance auto parts and they said they can only go buy ford recomendations and i should use mercon 3, then callled ford racing spoke to there engineers and he called his friend that repairs trans and said he wood not put mercon 3 or mercon 5 in e4od trans
as i was pouring the fluid out of the trans to rebuild it ,you would see parts of o rings distroyed and comming out broken up... so please be carful on what flud you use and do not change your fluid type a costley experiens that i learned
do not to beleve advance auto parts and there computers
stick to what you know is right
First, there is no such thing as MERCON 3, so you didn't put that in your trans. There was MERCON, which was the factory fill in every E4OD. Many fluids that met the MERCON spec also met the GM DEXRON III spec, so they called it MERCON/DEXRON III. That's probably why people say there was a MERCON III (or 3) fluid when there never was.
In 2006 Ford discontinued MERCON and changed MERCON V to be compatible with older transmissions such as the E4OD. That is now the right fluid. Some companies still make fluid to the MERCON spec. Either fluid will work fine and not damage the trans. I don't think the fluid caused your failure if you used MERCON or MERCON V.
Currently there is also MERCON SP and MERCON LV available. Both of these fluids will destroy an E4OD.
whell the bottel says mercon3 have read the bullitins from ford on the fluid and if you go to advance auto parts on the trans section you will find merc3 and wallmart also
i have read all the tsb that ford put out ok you say ther is no mercon 3
the moral of the story was to watch what you put in your trans so what is the reason that the o rings are gone if ford knows that the result of mercon 5 and atf is bad
explain the tsb that the ford engineers oked the use of mercon 5 for atf applications was it a money issue that ford would have to have multiple barrels of different tyes of mercon
or is it the attitude that let the people pay ????
i am a long time ford supporter
the onle cars in my driveway are fords
i am sorry if i went off but i am upset that i had to spend money for nothing advanced auto parts told me to do something that i should of known better and i love to find out how there computers got this info that is totaly wrong i follow the tsb but it was my fault that i was stupid...
