The overdrive light on column shift recently began blinking and causing hard shifts. Pulled code of P1728 which I am being told could be anything from dirty or low fluid to transmission completely unoperable. Has 162,000, but is a weekend truck for me.
I can clear the codes using the programmer and it will run fine for a while and then begin acting up again. I saw the thread from user 'etaube' titled 'computer issue?' but I am not having any other issue that he is describing. Fluid is clean and level is correct, so any ideas on which direction to take? Should I go electronic/computer route or transmission shop route? Thanks for any help for a newbie!

Correct is a slip code.
When the code is set the PCM will raise the EPC due do it saw the slip.
The high EPC is the reason for the harsh shift. After you clear the code it will shift normal until it codes again.
Can be a few reasons for the code. Most common is the TC is on its last leggs. (locking clutch)
In a '97 it often means the torque converter converter clutch piston has a crack. That's leaking pressure internally so that the clutch is slipping. The computer detects this slip and sets a P1728. If that's what it is it will start doing it more and more often. A new torque converter is the solution.
