If you are building it to tow with the of course you are wrong again. As for being a jerk, go away and be a moron elsewhere. The gas flow down hill in the intake?????? A vapor isn't really much concerned with up or down. Oh wait, put a blower on it so it will let the gass flow down hill better for you.
there is only room for one expert in here its not me ,seems to me u need to make a few calls to some of the aftermarket suppliers of high performance intakes let them know there is no need in the high performance world for intake other than the stock ones,maybe nascar and NHRA will change what works for them and use ur casr iron low risers

High performance intake do more damage on a stock truck motor than anything except to much carb. But I sure you would know this, you're such an expert and believe the hype from guys trying to sell you something. I was doing high performance before you were born. I was even a certified mechanic before I retired, do teach the teacher sonny.
So..any ways... When I asked about a aftermarket manifold and you said not with a stock engine. I'm not question you on the subject. But when does a engine go from stock to lightly modded? I want to dump the old the cast iron exhaust mani's and go with some head mens, also get a HEI distrib.
It runs so well now I don't really see any reason for doing a rebuild.
And it has enough power to keep me happy so I may or may not change cams...
The reason I ask is after doing all of this to this engine would it still be pretty much stock? since I wont be making huge upgrades to the engine would it just be better to keep the OE manifold? cuz if I wont see any noticeable gains then there is no reason for me to dish out the money for nothing more then a lighter manifold =) thanks
I wouldn't get an aftermarket intake either if there was no performance gains ... Why would Vic Edelbrock and his buddies waste their time just to save a few pounds? If I wanted to shed weight on the engine, maybe carbon fiber intakes would be better? Oh wait, the '96-97 Thinderbirds had a plastic intake, didn't they?

What I mean is I will not be putting a big cam in her, i'm not going to bore it .30 over Vic jr's intakes are good products if they were not then no one would use them. But I'm not building a fire breathing quarter mile eating hell spawn that needs a huge plan manifold that can swallow what a 1200cfm demon can stuff down its throat at 6000 rpm.
the only thing I'm wanting to do to her is change carbs install a HEI and put some headers on her.
Is doing such lite mods on it even going to push what that stock is able to flow? if it is then yes i'll get one but if its not going to help me then why should I spend 300 bucks thats what I'm asking.. No need to be a wise ***. I"m still learning this stuff thats why I'm asking. If I thought I knew better on the subject then I wouldn't have asked you.. And if that doesn't clear up my question then don't reply.
I reckon I'll throw my 2¢ in here...the choice to change your intake manifold largely depends on your choice on whether or not to upgrade your camshaft. I think if I were going to upgrade to even just an RV cam, I'd (probably waste my money and) buy an aftermarket intake, just for peace of mind. Although, in that situation, the stock intake would probably be more than adequate. With the mild cam, intake port velocities just aren't gonna be that high; therefore, the aftermarket intake PROBABLY wouldn't be able to improve anything.
Another thing to consider is the fact that the 460 intake is, well....big! The runners are long and relatively straight, especially compared to a small-block intake. This fact isn't too likely to be improved upon with an aftermarket intake with a comparable carburetor mounting pad height. An intake with a higher carb mounting pad will make for a straighter shot into the intake ports in the cylinder head, but at the expense of low-end performance.
Also considering low-end performance...as has been mentioned here countless times by Bear and myself, a carb that is too large won't perform well on a stock engine. The reason, again, is intake velocity. Big venturis slow the air down, resulting in poor throttle response and, to a point, fuel atomization. You'd probably be able to use a cam even slightly bigger than RV with good results from a 600-CFM carb.
Moral of my story is go nuts on exhaust work. ANYTHING is better than cast-iron manifolds. But save the intake mods for the day when you get the itch to upgrade engine internals. I never hear of anyone with a big-block reporting 50 extra horsepower and a ½-second quicker at the dragstrip with just a carb and intake swap...well, no one that's telling the truth, anyways.

thanks guys your time and info. I think I've made my mind up now on what I want to do to this engine =) a RV cam would sound great..
If and when you do change cam, wouldn't it be nicer to put on a nice, shiny new aluminum intake back on, and save your back in the process? lol I know I would! haha
I am sure you will feel some seat-of-the-pants difference with everything you do. Getting the engine to breathe better is the best thing you can do; Just remember, air in, air out. When that is optimized, all you can do then is work on the heads and valves; The rest is all about $$$.
Don't forget how much more cool the stuff will look when you open your hood!
