I am planning on buying an 83 F250 with a 460. The engine is stock and the carb needs a lot of work. Its the factory 4bbl. I am considering just buying a new carb. Is a 750 cfm too much carb? What works well? Also, will a pre 72 chain and gear set work with my truck or not?
Thanks
Aaron
I rebuilt my 460 with everything stock and added the edelbrock 750 on top. I think i have very adequate power and i like the way it performs. Instead of it just dumping gas in the back two barrels, it mists two more barrels of the spray you have up front. I like that better than having too much fuel dumped like the old motorcraft. Of course this is my opinion and there may be better carbs out there...but for just over $200, that edelbrock hasnt disappointed me yet.
I would highly suggest a 750 Edelbrock . It is mechanical secondary, but it has an internal top air flap so it won't over carb your engine. It will only open if the engine needs it. Mine does, I have been very satisfied with mine. If you have an auto trans, make sure to get the passing gear kickdown kit that just bolts to the linkage. very easy to install!!
The secondaries on a vac. secondary 750 Holley also only open on-demand. The secondary air flaps on the Edelbrock are not adjustable without significant modification of the bob weights. The Holley vaccuum secondaries are easily tuneable by changing the air spring in the vaccuum canister. I'd definitely go with the Holley.
