what motor do you have ?? my flatty won't even make noise through a cherry bomb glass -pac ..and I think for the lope ..it's the cam an' stuff up front that make the noise ..but then ..I'v been wrong before...
Hey Blackgold,
Hmmm.. I think it depends on your age a bit. We have a '50 with
a 351W with a mild cam & side exhaust. We started with Flowmaster 40's - you couldn't hear yourself think - Loud, really Loud. My son (21) thought they sounded great - I (54) couldn't take it. We found some Mustang GT stock mufflers on craigslist - much better- not quiet - plenty of action.

I think it is all subjective to our own personal tastes. I have the original flowmaster 40's on mine with 2.5 inch pipes that come out all the way to the rear, my mufflers sit right about at the gap between the cab and the bed. I have no drone what so ever. I have a Ford Racing 306 with the X303 cam, sounds awesome. I get that lopey cam sound with a "echo".
Prior to the new motor I has Thrush glass packs on the old flat head, it also sounded awesome.
Listen to a few cars or trucks with a similar set up to yours and go buy what your ears like! It is all good!
I am 50 but young at heart and like it a little loud but toned down and the Flowmaster 40's worked for me. Yep it is also all about the cam and heads up front that add to the sound.
I have dual 40's, the drone depends where you have your pipes end... mine are dumped just in front of my rear tires. It's loud inside, but I haven't added any sound deadener yet and plan to add a H-pipe crossover to help... If these things don't help, I'll have to start looking for another muffler...
Agreed. Where your pipes exit and also the sound deadning is a big factor with drone. I installed deadning on every interior cab area I could, firewall, floor, back of cab, roof, around windows, in the doors and then added full carpet with padding from the firewall to just under back window.
My perception may also be off, I just sold a 1965 Factory Five Cobra that I drove for 5 years, it had headers to straight pipes exiting just under my ears with no widows or roof. So in my 1952 F1 cab with sound deadning, full carpet and Flowmaster 40's is kind of like riding in my wifes quiet Lexus by comparison...LOL.
I also have an AOD with 28" tall rear tires so at freeway speed my RPM is only 2K which I am sure reduces the drone.
There are a lot of factors affecting drone. I have full exhaust and excellent sound deadening. The RPMs are my problem. C4 and 3.90 gears puts my cruise RPM in the 2200-2400 RPM range which is exactly where the annoying drone is. A little slower or faster and all is well. My Mustang has identical Flowmaster 40s and no noticeable drone. It's just a crap shoot with chambered mufflers.
