V10 Locked up
We are trying to determine what the issue is and where to look to see if there is a quicker fix other than going to a straight swap of the engine.
What have you fine folks seen as the issue with their v10 lock ups?
We can only turn the engine about 5 degrees then it stops, hard, 5 degrees back the other way and it stops hard again. The strange thing is, it ran just fine towing a trailer for several hundred miles, he parked it and bam, it wouldn't crank over. There was no sign of any distress before parking after unhooking the trailer. This same thing happend once before, and he thought it was a leaking injector as the engine would not turn over (like hydro lock), but would spin backwards. After turning the engine by hand backwards, it started up fine. Several short trips later, it showed no signs of an issue.
Again, it ran like a champ before being parked, then all of a sudden, the engine locked up.
Any help or thoughts would be appriciated.
I might sugest doing one plug at a time and then trying to tur it over after each removal.
That would isolate the possibl leeky injectr.
Good luck
Is this truck an automatic or stick?
How many miles are on the motor?
What method are you using while attempting to roll the engine manually?
During these attempts have you removed the spark plugs, otherwise your fighting the compression in the cylinders?
I,ve owned my 99 for 8 years and havent heard of any chronic engine lock up problems. Although there is an archive somewhere here that talks about a recall on defective parts installed on 6.8l produced between 3 mar 03 through 22 Apr 03. [posted by booty101]
A failing starter could give the impression that the engine is locked up. All the sounds of a routine start but no engine turn over. In my experience this type of failure comes on intermittently cranks like a champ one time and the next time no go. Give the starter a whack with a hammer while someone is cranking. sometimes that'll do it, not a repair but if it cranks at least your worries will be lessened.
Automatic

135,000

ratchet on crank bolt
During these attempts have you removed the spark plugs, otherwise your fighting the compression in the cylinders?Plugs are still in, but this isn't a compression stop, it's a hard stop with an audible “clank”. The last time I heard a noise like this, it was a broken rod. The problem is, it ran normally prior to being turned off. No odd noises, no banging nothing that would indicate a major engine failure.

We thought of the starter binding, but even with the starter out, the engine did the same thing
Thanks for the thoughts. Keep them coming.
I really couldn,t say if that is even possible. I have never owned an auto [inherently weak] but maybe if you got the rear wheels off the ground and tried to turn the engine over ?
or unplugged the wires to the tranny, It may release. Then again maybe it siezes in place.
Where is the transmission guy.
when I went to restart it was like the engine was locked
after about an hour it started but never moved again or aven attempt to move

If the motor was working fine right before you turned it off, then theres not much that can be your problem.
other then pulling the plugs one at a time and turning the motor, theres no real way to figure out whats wrong with your motor then tearing it down......
pull all the plugs and try to rotate, if it's a hydro lock it will have been a progressing problem and plugs will tell the tale of where the problem lies if that's where it's at.
Try putting trans in nuetral to see if you can manually turn driveshaft
if it's still locked up with all plugs removed
pull inspection cover and use a flash light and mirror to inspect for any convertor bolts that may have sheered and are binding up
while your donw there make sure starter gear is not locked out/extended into the flywheel binding it up
Those are the easy things.
Pull the oil pan to make sure you dont have any tell tales of broken rods/mains....rotating assemly misalignment due to breakage
Then i'd go and pull the front of the engine off and inspect timing chain to be sure it did'nt stretch too far, break and cause a bind behind the cover.
