HP I tried tweeking the 312. The problems I was having was about everything anybody mentioned. I took the big blue box down to a old timer and he worked on it for about two hours and it runs great other than it is starving on the 2bbl.
How big of a difference did swapping a 292 to a 312 make? I'm really considering rebuilding my 292 into a 312, either this summer or the next, depending on how far I get with what little time I have . I know that there are affordable 4 bbl manifolds available from some of the T-bird pages.
:-) If you have an extra $750, you can get a tri-power setup for a 312 :-)

Nothing, and I mean nothing, stirs the soul, saying I'm a bad **** like lettin'em rip with a window shaking, fuel gulpin, carbon monoxide belchin, attention gettin, V-oh my LORD!-8!
Nothing other than better gas milage and more pony's. The old timer thinks that a bigger cam was installed during the overhaul hence the starving problem. I have to fill it up with premium to keep from dieseling. My water pump is shot on the 312 so I am replacing it with the one from the 292. The 312 came with a 4 bbl. manifold and I have a holley 1850-3 600 CFM, but I have to wait to alter my linkage and fuel lines. A few days back I hauled a couple of 9-10 inch diameter roots out of the ground in 4-5 foot lengths and it did not hesitate a bit. I think a newer ignition system,4 bbl and dual exhaust and it will be a beast. My son has a 68 f-250, built 390,C6, Jacobson ignition Flowmaster exhaust loves my truck. Go with the 312 idea I know you will like it. Give me three years for the tri-power.
from what i understand from around this area anyway is that the 312 is definitely the ultimate y block, but costs for rebuild unfortunately r around double that of a 292, honestly i don't know why.
