just picked up a 3 duece setup off e-bay... includes a 553 edlebrock manifold and "just carbs". i need linkage, fuel line and fuel block as well as aircleaners. gonna mount this on my 292 in the '54 F-100. the guy i used to build cars with 35 years ago says they are a problem to set up right and keep tuned. i'm wondering if this conventional wisdom still holds. am installing a pertronix system in the distributer... what is there to tune? once fuel flow is set, linkage is bolted up what changes? my truck is a daily driver... 2 miles to school and 2 miles home and occasional short trips out of town. anyone with some background in this kind of thing? i get great help from you guys on this forum... any tips would be appreciated. pete
The trick to tuning is getting all of the cylinders to have the same amount of fuel. If the front cylinders are rich and the back are lean you will end up having problems down the road. I am not very proficiant at tuning multi-carb setups. I beleive you will end up looking at spark plug colors to ensure you have uniform burns. You can also set up the carb to be in stages. Mid carb to be the primary and the other two to be secondaries. Just take your time and look to some of the older performance magazines for more help. I know this doesn't really tell you how to do it but it gives you more dirrection to go. Have you called some of the local speed shops for advice?
I have a 3x2 setup that I am working on and will install on a 292 for my 55 F100. I bought a progressive linkage that allows you to set when the outer carbs open. It uses the center carb until about 1/2 throttle when the outer carbs kick in. This is easier on the gas than straight linkage. It is like having mechanical secondaries on a 4 barrel carb. The linkage is made by Offenhauser and is available at Hot Rod and Custom Supply 941-574-7744 and www.rodncustom.com
for $64.95.
There are other linkages for more money if you want polished parts and ball bearing joints.
You will need a fuel block to distribute the fuel to each carb and a fuel pressure regulator and gauge. The old carbs don't like more than 1-2 pounds of fuel pressure or they will leak badly. The carbs will need long shafts to mount the linkage.
Hello, I have a three-two on an offy intake in a 57' Ranchero. It runs three Strombergs with a 97 in the center and two 94's in the front and rear. It is set up with progressive linkage, and runs primarily on the center carb until just over half throttle and the other two kick in. my unit was set up by Hot Rod Carbs. in Missouri. I cannot remember their number but i have it at work. They also set up a progressive 6-2 for me, and i am very happy with both. the three-two has been running for three years and I have never even put a screw driver on it, and this truck is driven almost daily. They are not cheap, but the price depends on how much chrome and so forth you want. if you are interested, just leave a note here and i will get you the rest of the info on how to contact them. P.S. They also did a three two for a friend of mine on a 400" pontiac which is raced occasionally, and it works great also. Just let me know if you want more info and i will get you the number. See ya Fomogo fomerly fomoco1
