the starter motor on my 272 does not spin the motor fast enough and seems to be drawing excessive current, so I believe it needs to be reconditioned. The starter is the old type with a separate solenoid.
Question. do any more modern starter motors fit the 272
Peterbond, A comany called Tri-c engineering sells a modern starter for the Y-block. I recently purchased two of them. One for a customer's 292 and another for a project of my own. To my knowledge this starter will work on the 272 as well. It looks alot like a newer gear reduction starter you would find for a late model Windsor. It is very expensive, the pair ran me about $280.00 each. I have heard of guys using FE starters before, but the Tri-c unit is made to fit the Y-block. If you need help contacting tri-c leave a note here, as all of my information is at work. FOMOGO
Are you using a 6 volt or 12 volt system? I have a 12 volt system with the original 6 volt starter and it cranks over great. I rebuilt the starter myself with a parts from Sacremento Vintage Ford. You can get new brushes and bushings for about $8.00. The thing to watch out for is the fiberboard washers on the thru bolts. I replaced them with nylon washers from the hardware store because they were grounding to the case. Lots of sparks. You can also buy a rebuilt starter from them for $95 to $110 depending on application and 6 or 12 volt. There number is 1-888-FORD-100 and on the internet at www.vintage-ford.com.
For those interested, TRI-C Engineering can be contacted at 661-295-1550 or their web site is www.tri-cengineering.com. This is a great modern starter upgrade to do away with the old Bendix type starter.

I had the same problem with my 66 with a 292. I took the starter to our local Alternator shop for a rebuild. They replaced the brushes ($2.00), turned the commutator $(7.00),and cleaned and painted the housing. total price...$9.75 and it works great.
Also, check your battery connections. If the terminal clamps have been replaced with the bolt on type, remove them and clean the wire ends with a wire brush, reclamp the ends to the wires, clean the terminals and the terminal posts with a wire brush and reinstall. Clean the ground cable where it bolts to the engine as well.
