What is the longest anyone has let there truck go with the factory plugs still in? I'm at 88k on mine and I'm a little hesitant (scared) to change them
Rich
At 88,000 miles you are still about 12,000 miles away from needing to change them. Even then, the will probably still be fine.
My truck had over 115,000 miles on them when I changed the plugs and they didnt even really need to be replaced, but since I had them out I figured why not change them.
Honestly, I think you are worried about a whole lotta nothin'.
i bought my truck with 120k. after reading the posts i was hesatent to change any. finally had a mis fire on #6 so i changed it and the cCOP. no probles. decided to do the left bank that weekend. no problem so i did the right side the following week. clean the holes first, get plugs straight, no air guns, dont overtighten, use a dab of antisieze and grease on the wire caps-- now have 170K and all is good.
60K is a reasonable change interval, although IIRC my first change happened around 90K. After reading for years about plugs popping and finally having it happen to me I feel you are very foolish to leave them in for more than 60K miles.
Had a plug go bad at 65K. Changed the right side when that happened. Changed left side some miles later. Three plugs looked pretty bad, but the rest looked barely used. I plan on changing them again at 120k. No need to take unnecessary chances.
I have an 01 F-150 7700 GVW. It has 478,000 k on it. The longest I have gone without changing plugs is 232,000 K, and when I removed the old plugs they looked as clean as the day I put them in. The reason I changed them was because the engine just seemed tired, lacking power and hard starting in -20degree C weather. It still ran smooth. When I changed the plugs, it was like I breathed new life into an old engine. Original plugs were changed at 183,000 k, thats when I bought the truck. Next set of plugs were installed at 415,000 k, and I used NGK. Unit now has 478,000 k and is still performing well. I do not baby my unit, I have pulled up to 8,000 lb dozer blades on a 18' car trailer for more than 300 k and have no problem pulling large round balers and other farm machinery. I love my rig and it is one heck of a workhorse. I thought they would be a nightmare to change, but once your in there elbow deep, they are not that bad.
I have a '99 F-150 4.6L w/o COP's. Right now I only have 42,000 miles and I have been reaading the "how to change plugs in 4.6 & 5.4 thread".
I will probably do mine around 75K. It gives me p l e n t y of time to read, learn, get all the necessary tools etc. I've been looking at the engine and I believe I can do it.
Btw I actually have my plugs. I purchased 8 AC Delco 41-810 from an auto parts store that was closing. They are the correct part for the engine. I emailed AC and they told me they were double platinum (which makes sence, since they were list for $6.00 ea but I paid $3.00 ea).
I have read so much about only using Motorcraft plugs. If anyone has used these please chime in. I suppose I might be able to bring them to AA and get a credit towards purchasing AGSF32FM if they would be a potential problem.
