Ok, new to the diesel world so I really appreciate this site, threads, and your expertise. I purchased a 2004 F250 Diesel with 49,000 miles, banks, k&n etc... great deal, clean Oasis ( thanks again on the Oasis). I just found out it has a bad EGR cooler (another thread) and worry about the Banks screwing with things. I have no experience with tuners/chips etc. so I was wondering if you can just unplug those suckers if you dont want to use it, or is there more to it. I am only pulling a boat ( approx. 5000lbs) so I think this bad boy has enough power without all the added stuff.
I would keep the gauges that will come in handy not just for towing but everyday driving as well. If it's a tuner then it should be as simple as returning the truck's computer to stock. If there is a module or chip then it is a little more involved but still easily doable.
I think with banks modules all you have to do is unplug the hookups to the box and from the box and just take the module out of the loop. I don't know for sure, but I think that's it I'm just not familiar with modules enough to say for sure.
If you have the red box under the hood, all you need to do is remove the cable from the PCM, I believe its the middle one, and remove the PCM cable form the Banks module, its labled on the module, and plug that cable back into the PCM. I am almost certain that there is a power and ground related to that somewhere too.
Something to think about is if you have the PDA you may want to keep the Banks and run it in the stock setting. I too have the Banks, which I am not keen on...but it was there when I bought mine too. Anyway, the guages are nice and I do use the PDA my buisness, however I do not use the Banks as a tuner. I just use it for the guages.
I wish someday that I can afford the tuner that Matt form Spartan is working on. If not I will remove mine and just put some guages in it and put the Banks on E-Bay.
Dont dispose of it...for some reason people are paying big bucks for them on ebay. Like I said if I can get Matt to get back to me on tunes for my truck I will ditch the Banks, buy some guages, and get Matts tuner. I know there is someone on here who also uses the Banks just for guages. I know...from what I have read here that shift on the fly tuners are not good for the 6.0 torque shift trucks so yes if you dont have the guages get rid of the banks. But sell it on Ebay you will be suprised.
It won't ruin your tranny if you drive it correctly. Yeah if you completely floor the throttle on takeoff through a few shifts it won't be good, but if you use it for increased half throttle performance without kicking down a gear your tranny will be fine.
i just put my banks w/pda back in yesterday. the same thing that you are going thru. i bought an 03 f250 with the banks setup in it already & this past winter the egr cooler started leaking. not trusting ford i removed everything and took it to ford ,they replaced the cooler under warrenty with the 100.00 deductable that was back in feb. just now got the time to put it back in if you have the books for the banks set up it's real easy to remove it took about an hour or so and every thing goes bac to factory settings. i especially like the gage pkg on the pdf but also found that if i run it on the 4 or 5 setting i picked up about 2 mi. per gal. i don't stomp on the pedal though i didn't buy the truck to spin the tires off or to race i pull a 35' fiver with it and love it i pull in the 3 setting and watch the oil temps. if they start to climb i back off i pulled the fiver to myrtle beach last year doing between 65 & 70 all the way and got 13 mi. per gal. if you have any questions let me know you can reach @ rangerbob@comcast.net good luck

I had noticed the one bad thing about obd gauges(even if they only partially get their readings from the computer, all that have egt gauges get them from a seperate probe that does not deal with the computer), although they are better then no gauges at all, they still read cooler then they might actually be. I know my tranny temps were 30 degrees cooler with the obd-II gauge then the analog gauge. That is something you might want to consider when your going by OBD-II gauge readings. Although like I said having those types of gauges is better then having nothing at all
