i have a 1991 f 150 351 windsor 5.8 v8 and i really like to own a 53-54-55 or a 56 f100 and i would like to know if giving up my f150 to get one of the above old trucks is a smart idea.i know efi is an advantage when it come to detecting problems carb etc. what about comparering power and hauling.i love the appearance of the older trucks. i don't know much about the y block v8's are they good or bad compared to my f150. thank you.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jan-03 AT 05:52 PM (EST)]Gee....I'm not sure where to begin here. It's like answering the question of which is better: Phoenix, AZ or Fairbanks, AK. If you think you'd be looking for to trade up in terms of sheer utility, you'd be nuts to give up nearly 40 years of safety, suspension technology, comfort, and fuel/hauling efficiency. Now, if, on the other hand, you use the truck to carry yourself and your wallet for short trips and maybe an occasional trip to the DIY home improvement store, and like to have heads turn when you ride, well ok.
I have a '64 all original 292 in a 3/4 ton and while I'd not give it up for the world, it rides like, well, a truck and I am well aware of the distance I should keep 'tween me and the vehicle in front of me. I'm also well aware of the consequences if I grossly misjudge the situation. Add to that the fact the gearing on the ol' 4 spd. 4.55:1 (or 4:89:1...whatever) doesn't lend itself to any highway trip of any significant length. I'd suggest you buy the retro vehicle for what it is and it's not a modern pickup. If you embrace that philosophy, you'll be more likely to have a happy marriage with the pickup and not lust for what it simply is not.
