I had my generator on my 272 rebuilt a year ago and the truck probably only has about two hours on it since. The problem is that it is only putting out about 1 volt. I can't remember how to excite it to get pumping some juice.
With the motor NOT running, disconnect the FIELD wire from the regulator terminal and momentarily touch it to the BATTERY terminal of the regulator.
If the genny is not in the vehicle then connect a thick strap from a good solid ground on the genny to whichever battery terminal is normally grounded.
Then momentarily touch the FIELD terminal to the Hot side of the battery.
This will excite the field coils as well as polarize it properly.
The bracketry to mount a GM alternator can get involved or you can buy a billet assembly. Wiring is simple but then the fun begins.
All bulbs need changing
Gauges need a voltage dropper
Heater and radio
Wipers
Flashers
Coil needs a resistor (easier to buy an 80's era Mopar coil and resistor)
Old wiring may be ready to crumble
My 54 F350 is still 6V, Im not looking foreward to upgrading. Ive a Ford alternator/bracket/regulator/harness from a F600 that was converted ages ago but I know that once I touch the wiring Im going to have to do a complete rewire!
Took me only 20 minutes to convert mine to a delco remy 3 years ago,and i know i have put at least 25,000 on the yblock pickup since. If you use the one post delco remy alternator dear, that goes directly to the battery, you don't have the issue of bulbs and wiring and all the other stuff.Check my message i left above to "jbarger"in topic called 292 alternator swap. It's a 20 minute job dear.Being that you just go firectly to the battery positive post,it eliminates the need to bother with condenser for coil or bulb change or any of that. It's only when you go to ignition, then to battery those are problems, please read my reply at that topic on top of this one i told you about.

This cannot be done with the 6 volt sysytem.
Im offering to send photos of the setup!!And you dont even need brackets!!!Sure for the lower adjuster i used a 66 mustang ear as i told gbarger, but had i not had that part laying around,i could have easily just bought the bolt adjuster used on mid 70's lincons for the bottom. It's so easy,My brother and my father shook my hand after i did this one night.Since that day, they look up to me.And you could put a gauge on it if you wanted to as far as that matter is concerned.A simple one from the battery to the cab.Its a strong fix and lined up perfect!!!I have pictures to prove it..

Anyone else needs pictures of the delco remy hookup, just email me.I also have the part number and discovered in the delco remy industty it is known as the "self exciter"type one bolt setup...Janet
