Go to this web site: http://members.aol.com/Yblock/YBLOCK.htm
This is the Y-Block page. They have a chat/forum and the guys there are just as great, knowledgeable, and helpful as the guys and gals that use this great forum. If you are interested in performance, increasing horsepower, etc they can answer your questions. Alot of guys add ramshorns exhaust manifolds for dual exhaust and for looks.
Personally, my Y-block is stock with no changes except for a rebuild (bored out a bit). It is plenty powerful for my needs. It really has a cool deep throated sound. To see my 'Y' I just posted a pic on my gallery.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-03 AT 12:08 PM (EST)] the trucks i am looking at are 1953-54 and 55 y block . i have a 1991 f-150 5.8 351 windsor and she has been nothing but trouble although she delivers the power that can make a young man happy. what i want to know is, are any of the above mentioned trucks with y blocks better or not, compared to the 1991 f-150 i have.Power wise hauling , and if these are big blocks, and if they are big blocks ,what is the difference between small and big blocks ,and are big blocks better than small blocks ?thank you.

Good to see someone give the Y a strong consideration. First, a 53, if stock will be a flatty 239 v-8. The Y showed up in '54 and '55 as a 239 (oh, confusing!) . '56 base Y was a 272. Cars put loads of 292s into inventory. That size and 312s (has bigger mains)like mine are probably the most desireable. Do check the Y Forum and you can see plenty of yakkin about displacements and how to hop em.

Big block? Well if sheer weight counts, they all are. Heavy as the Ford 460s and FE's at a ballerina like 625 lbs +. The culprit, and what we love is the deep cast skirt along the crank. Makes the motors heavy as hell but keeps things smooth when these babies lug at low RPM. Great around town towing motors! Decent mid range, nothing but noise at higher RPMs. Cool solid lifter sounds. Easy to tune. Easy to start. Parts aint as bad as some might tell you pricewise or availability

And get this 'rodders, they FIT in the truck. No cuttin', cussin' droppin', floppin', tweakin'.

Bottom line is that I reccomend finding your 54-56 (and up to 63) with a good Y in it and DRIVE it.

Hmmm, Rhodesia? That brings back memories; spent a bit of time in Salisbury.

The 292 is probably the best choice based on basic availability and rebuild parts. The others are available but rebuild kits are a bit more expensive and climbing. Even the 292 is pricey if you compare to brand X.

For a pickup, an easy 225-250 hp is attainable while maintaining drivability. After that it gets expensive.

For a crate engine its pretty hard to beat the 351W.

about them cool old trucks, do you guys think that the 351 windsor engine i have could be dropped into a 53-55 or a 56 F-100 truck body maybe with the trany as well ,or is this something that can't or should'nt be done. my problem is that i so love the look of the 53-55- and the 56 f-100 trucks with the FATT fenders and would love for mine to run like a ****.
PLEASE SHARE THOSE SECRETS GUYS

Forrdytube:
In my opinion a Y block w,dual glass packs sound better than most of Fords other blocks.I think they are more "mello". Of course a st 6 cyl W/ headers or split manifold and heat riser blocked sound good.
That gives 2cyl on one pipe and 4 on other pipe. It can be a wicked unbalanced sound.
I better shut up or I 'll be telling my age. That's the way we did it 40-50 yr's ago in the wood shed ,but it was fun.
