Unhappy Electric choke

Hi,

I have a F-100 with a 360, 2100 motorcraft carb with an electric choke. When the choke opens it takes about 7-10 minutes, that's when it wants to work. I have to stick something in there so it doesn't choke it self out while waiting for the choke to open. My question is should it take that long for the choke to work? If not what do I need to replace the entire assembly or maybe just the coil that heats up?

Also when it does decide to work it takes about two hours for the coil to cool down, is that normal?

Thanks.

The electric portion is a simple replacement part. Likely yours is gummed up from the years? or it could be just adjusted too far too?

When fully cold, adjust it so that is JUST closes fully and not much more. That way it will start to open as soon as it gets any heat in it. If it's set really tight, then it will take forever for it to open. Rotate it so that choke is fully open, then slowly rotate it back til choke plate just closes fully. You'll need to hold the throttle open partially so that the high idle cam can move freely. If not, it will give you a false setting.

My truck has the bi metal spring auto choke. Is it possible and easy to change to electric?

NAPA electric choke with brain

I really like my NAPA electric choke with brain. It works great at really low temperatures, and doesn't have to be reset seasonally. I've been happy with it from -20 in the high Rockies, and in Las Vegas!

The "brain" module is just a little thing with a big copper tab. It goes under an intake manifold bolt. This item costs about $75.00 and is worth every penny. It solves all the problems chokes introduce, and even compensates for restart-type issues.

The bi-metal uses heat from exhaust to open choke. The electric is a simple conversion. Take three screws off the black choke assy, remove and install electric version. Hook up power and ground and set properly. Done.

Should be a "universal" kit, as I don't think there is much any difference between them(any manufacture). Holley, Autolite, Rochester.......I think they all use the same pieces.
